Time to sort the men from the kids, the fan from the simply curious, the NOOnliner from the NOpasserby, the poster from the lurker, the people with substance from the unsubstantiated claims, the I-pawned-my-mattress-to-follow-them-around from the I-wish-NO-would-come-and-play-at-my-local (not on a Friday cos' I play bowls then), the NOOL-is-my-umbilical-attachment-to-reality from the I-only-come-here-for-the-banter.

Let's start the year with a bang! :jump:

Alternative question: Is New Order the best a man can get? Or is it Gillette?

Even though I love The Fall, on this one occasion I have swayed the Order way.

Probably all those Joy Division fans ... dressed in black, pickin' their fookin' noses.

Well Skinny Puppy are pretty decent too...

Why else would we all be here? The answer is YES. Although The Cure/Depeche Mode/Erasure run a close joint second.

MB For the benefit of our North American members the last sentence was meant as a joke.

Their music, their attitude & the crap dancing. Simply the best by a wide country mile. :)

I had the first NO vote because the Jam is the best group of all time to me. NewOrder is tied for 2nd.

I voted no - I could never name one band as "the best band ever". I think a real testiment of a truly great band is how much people still listen to them once they are done. Also, how timeless their music is. You could play JD for someone who never heard them and they would be hard pressed to tell the year of the recording. I love NO, they have always been on the top of my list - or sharing the spot with U2, Depeche Mode, The Cure, OMD, Ultravox, and They Might Be Giants. Feel free to tear me a new one... I might as well give you permission since you will do it anyway. It terms of greatness (in my humble and personal opinion), U2 and the Beatles would rank higher than NO.

I'm gonna have to go with "no" if only because you have to go back to the Pistols, the Who, the VU and the Kinks to understand NO, as well as Iggy, Bowie, Buzzcocks, etc etc. But New Order are pretty high on my personnal list....

Yep, VU would have to be ahead of the Order. Not a favorite band of mine, but higher up the list of the greats. It seems that they influenced pratically everyone.

for me, Joy Division is the best band ever.

with The Jesus & Mary Chain coming in second.

actually, here's my top five bands of all-time (in order):

  1. Joy Division
  2. The Jesus & Mary Chain
  3. The Cure
  4. New Order
  5. Skinny Puppy

For me it has to be Kon Kan, no question about it. ;)

I say yes...if only because of the strong John Denver influence....

Without a shadow of doubt, the best band ever. Although Hubert does have a point, Fugazi are top notch also CTB :bear:

Didn't realise complete one-eyed obsession with the band was a pre-requisite to posting here.... They're pretty good, of course, but not a patch on the Fall.

Yeah I was going to go with Information Society, Kagagoogoo, or Snap....but you are right...there is no one better than Kon Kan

While I have to agree to an extent with you and Wolfie that there may be more "important" or even "better" bands I think its also important to consider the following:

  1. Clearly Budvar's question could be translated to mean "my favorite band of all time" in which case I would have to go with a qualified yes (as long as JD and Electronic and Monaco could be included in that)

  2. How many "important" or "great" bands have survived and succeeded in so many different genres of music as well as so many permutations. I would offer for your consideration that JD is widely credited with being seminal to the "goth" movement (at least according to Bono :) (BTW I think that anyone who thinks that JD is Goth doesn't get it). NO is widely credited with inspiring and legtitimizing electronic dance music (what other song do you hear all the time from the early 80's). NO is widely credited with helping to foster the Manchester scene that produced a slew of great bands.

To summarize:

--creation of post punk (not Goth) genre --popularizing and dominating dance music (look at the dance charts from 1983 through 1993...almost every single charted in the top two or three) --Side Projects with hit songs

  1. How many bands can claim "hits" in 4 different decades? How many can claim hits with side projects?

  2. Many of the groups that you mention would fall apart with the removal of one member (or are individuals "Iggy" and not bands to begin with. I would argue that the concept of "band" would mean that all members are important but that the removal of any member would not necessarily mean the collapse of the music etc. Between Electronic, Monaco (not revenge) and TOT I think you could argue that you have 5 very creative individuals that are capable of producing hits in their own right and yet can consistently mesh together to also create genius.

My 2 cents...

Ummm I like/listen to/and am influenced by NO/JD/Electronic so much that it creeps out my good friends and my fiancee....

I listed to NO/JD/E every day...they are the soundtrack of my life...and just like Barney says on Finsbury...they often bring me right back to a certain place and time.

As an example: The Crystal single is imprinted from my vacation to Capri last year...I can't hear the song without being back there kicking it on the Mediterranean in August :)

Let's start the year with a bang! :jump:
