in the record collector, jan 03 no281, just saw joy divisions unknown pleasures came in at no22.

it had one of the most memorable album reveiws of the entire era, which was penned by sounds scribe dave mcCullough, who jettisoned the traditional journo-posturing in favour of a sobering short story.

under the headline "death disco" the tale captured the final hours of the fictional andrew, a manic depressive who slashes his wrists to the sound of jd's seriously disturbing debut.

mcCullough awarded the album 5 stars without hesitation praising the album's beautiful melancholy on a plateau of total desolation. and so ...theres more but i aint got time as i'm going out soon... anyone remember the reveiw(only for the oldies)

nice to see them in another list but must say, Dave McCullough=notorious cornball. I've got the Death Disco review, reads like cheesy kid diary stuff. Aside from the melodramatic corn that appears in his reviews, he did an interview and article of JD in Sounds with the headline "Pseud Yourself" where he pretty much implies they're a bunch of brainless phony idiots. of course JD weren't the best interview subjects anyway but the article was pretty bad.

Yeah, a friend of mine e-mailed me that article about a year ago, it's pretty obvious Davy wasn't much impressed to begin with as far as the band were concerned, and he just took a condescending attitude to them through the rest of the article.

Yes, but they did a version of Helter Skelter that was on their first album, The Scream, though I'm thinking that the answer is the Damned with their version of Help on the flip of New Rose.

Of course, I should have said A Day In The Life by The Fall.

Actually, seeing Wire's Pink Flag on the list, have any of you caught up with the Read & Burn 01 and 02 CDs that they put out last year. Absolutely fucking superb, both of them!

Wow, there is a Cure CD on there, it is above JD, and no one has spewed their Cure hate posts yet. I am amazed. Maybe they haven't read that far yet.

Since when are the Ramones 'UK Punk/New Wave' ? I would yank them and put the Swell Maps' 'Trip to Marineville' on their instead. Or the Raincoats, Young Marble Giants (they're British, right?), or perhaps Glaxo Babies or the Lowest Note on the Organ. And the Pop Group, duh. Essential Logic. That list sucks !

I think the category is much broader than Punk New wave. It's a great list, but there is no one or two music genre's you could use to classify these 25 albums.
