This may have been mentioned but there's a two page Hooky interview in the current issue of the "United We Stand" fanzine, as he and Barney are both United fans. There's anecdotes about George Best, "World In Motion", touring and more. Very good it is too.
There's also an reason why "International" was released. Quote: "We didn't use to be very big in Europe but we're more popular now and so that's to satisfy that market."
Hells bells, I was late to the game on Saturday so didn't get my usual copy ...off to WHSmiths now...

Am I the only one wondering where all this United stuff came from?
ATR wore an old United away top to Sweden - I think? - this summer in the hope of bumping into Barney to ask him if he could actually identify what it was.
Never once heard 'em mention football till last year - everyone knew Gretton was a City fan, but that was the only mention football ever got.
Hooky mentions in the interview that he's always gone to games and actually had a season ticket last year. He says he gave his ticket up as watching United was more frustrating than being in New Order. He mentions that Barneys a United fan but doesn't go to games but that Steve isn't into football. I think Ian Curtis was a red unless i'm mistaken. Uniteds PA people have played Love Vigilanties at half time on a couple of ocassions recently.
Dinamo Zagreb, my hometown club (then sadly called Croatia Zagreb), had played Man United in the 1999/ 2000 Champions League group phase, and they weren't good at all. We' d had a deserved 0-0 draw at Old Trafford, and were the better team in Zagreb, but we got robbed for a penalty and they got an undeserved free-kick in a space of a minute. Then they got a lucky deflacted goal early in the second half, and even the wizardry of the legendary Robert Prosinecki couldn't save us from defeat. I know it's off topic, but I just had to tell everybody.

I'm sorry, but I've never heard this football angle before till last year. They might be Salford born and bred but there's undeniably a hint of Gloryhunter in them..

Nah, cos United won f'all many years ago.
It's only in the nineties they developed any sort of consistency.
New Order were widely quoted as knowing f'all about footie when World In Motion came out.
Amusing, but after they lost to Liverpool 1-0 last January one of the roadies put LFC in big dayglo lettering down the side of Hooky's speakers, and it remained there the rest of the Oz tour. I doubt the band knew the significance.
Julijana, was that the game where one of your players missed an open goal in the last couple of minutes that would have put us out of the competition? I think it was after this game that Roy Keane made his no infamous 'prawn sandwich statement. Back on the subject of New Order i remember an interview with Barney and Hooky on Piccadilly radio in Manchester in the mid 80's where the interviewer mentions football. Barney told him not to bring football into it as he knew they didn't like football. By the way Julijana i agree about the legendary Prosinecki. Did he once play for Red star Belgrade? I remember United playing them in the super cup in 91. They had a great team then, Savicevic, Panchev and Prosinecki, battered us, but we won 1 - 0, we got a soft penalty i seem to remember.
Ian was a united fan, back when those of us who were around will remember that you needed a sense of humour to be one, because LFC were winning the league with what is now known as monotonous regularity. Only because it was united who won 8 out of 10 premier league titles.... ..........football, don't get started on it...........
Seems to me that Hooky is spending more time in interviews than in the studio. Is the next NO album going to be called "The Republic Strikes Back", with Mr Hague's synthesizers replacing Hooky's bass?

I'm also a bit mystified about this football angle. I remember reading an Electronic interview in 1996 (I wish I could remember which mag), where Barney states that he absolutely hated football and could not give a toss about it. Contrary to that though there was a Cash for Questions in Q in 1999 where he was asked what was good about Manchester, to which he replied 'we've got the best football team, the best bands and the best gang violence'

Er, sorry, to me they sound like the absolute garbage tosh someone who cared NOTHING for football would come up with.
World In Motion was much better, footie wise. At least Keef Allen is a fan of the game, and slipped in a couple of fine 'Summer of Lurv' related double-entedres.. .

Well, maybe they're just like me: I hated football when I was young (er, I mean younger...) but nowadays I actually like it: not my favorite item in life, but I learned to enjoy it!
