the us promo is a 12" not sure if the 7" has a live mix - bound to be on the discography of here or the other site

Murv, the Video version of TPK is available on the Qwest 12" promo PRO-A-2342

It's an edit of the version used in the vid. The one on Retro is a full version, but not the actual version used in the promo.

from the discogrpahy here US 12" Promo (Qwest PRO-A-2342)

thats the one you want.

incidentally did you know the german sleeve of tpk has the lettering in a gold/bronze colour printed on instead of embossed like the rest of the world?

Just a question - Has anyone here got a copy of the Academy live VHS video (Brixton, 1988) which was withdrawn for some reason because of the sleeve design? How rare is this item? I've been on the trail of it for absolutely ages.

wahey, i knew my post would evoke the stirring of passions in all you vinyl puritans out there! i DO have a lot of rare cds of new order and their side projects. i DONT collect vinyl. the reason for this is simple,A, i find it too expensiove to collect.B, most of the covers are dog eared and the vinyl is usually scratched to bits. C, I DONT HAVE A RECORD PLAYER !.D, finally ,i only got into new order when i was about 17 and sadly the age of cd was upon us it was simply easier to collect the cds! and lastly but not leastly, my friend has most of the vinyl that new order and their side projects have ever done and has transferred everthing onto cd from the vinyl for me!!!!!! sorry if i upset you with my post,it was meant to cause friction amongst the vinyl puritans! yours is the only reply to the post i originally posted that i have read . i"m off to check the others out now to see how theyve slagged me off too! kind regards. steve smith,uk :):(:)

Please do yourself a favour - get hold of at least a cheap turntable (even something by Chad Valley will do), a stylus, and some beautiful sexy luscious black 12" plastic - and FEEL the difference of the sound of New Order pulsating through your veins. It really IS that sensational, believe me.... ;)

Your search for this particular artefact could well be in vain, I don't have it either but I believe the original issue was pulled cos the sleeve image infringed copyright of some sort or other. Either that or something unofficial wasn't cleared. (Rocket Mick or one of the other knowledgable types here may be able to fill you in on this cos I'm not 100% certain). Needless to say, the first print is probably now as rare as rocking horse shit.....

I don't think they had permission to use the statue picture, or something.

Thanks for posting this one up OB - great stuff....I'd long forgotten what the cover looked like all this time. As for the statue - I wonder whether Peter Saville was caught trying to get in to the Louvre without actually paying..... perhaps that's the real reason why they withdrew this cover - cos of "breach of admission rights".... ;)

Some omissions to the New Order list I put up earlier, then the Joy Division records I mentioned I would add.

1988 Peel Sessions vinyl LP

1994 The Best Of New Order (double vinyl LP)

JOY DIVISION:

1979 Unknown Pleasures LP (Factory records) Unknown Pleasure CD (Centerdate re-issue) Transmission 12" (Factory Benelux )

1980 Love Will Tear Us Apart 12" and 7" (originals) Closer LP (Rough Trade/Factory) Closer CD (Centerdate re-issue) Atmosphere 12" (original)

1981 Still (reissue of vinyl double LP) Still CD (Centerdate issue)

1987 Peel Sessions 12"

1988 Substance LP (original) Substance CD (original) Atmosphere 12" and 7" re-isues

For the benefit of this thread I'll just add the Blue inner-sleeved version of the Perfect Kiss 12" I picked up in Nottingham for £4.50 a few weeks ago and mentioned elsewhere....

All this talk of recent compilations prompts me to wonder why they couldn't have released all the original 12-inchers that weren't on CD in the first place - but in sleeves with original artwork just like the vinyl versions. I'msure a lot of collectors would welcome such a package. Instead we had to make do with Retro, which wasn't by anymeans the most comprehensive collection and duplicated a lot of tracks (like Perfect Kiss album edit) that had already existed many times before.

I have a neat little collection (not too big however) of exclusive Factory promo vinyl that a good friend of mine managed to help secure for me .... there are bands other than New Order amongst the number - people like Quando Quango, Biting Tongues, the Railway Children, Life, A Certain Ratio, The Wake, Happy Mondays, Marcel King and Miaow.

Of the New Order stuff, I have a white label of their "Substance" double album and - as far as i can remember (most of my collection sits back at my parents home in Dorset!!) a one-sided promo of "Run 2" which I believe is extremely rare.

I'll put up the rest of the items at a later point if I can remember.

Cheers,

— Phillip .

I believe it was withdrawn as although it fited in with the other stuff of that era in teerms of featuring statues it was not actually designed by peter saville (will have to check sleeve when get home) & they decided they just didnt like it

it was available from virgin(or hmv - forget which) with an free t-shirt - i didnt get mine there so didnt get the t, but dont know if anyone else has one...

it still turns up on e-bay fairly frequently sop point your browser in that direction...

Aaaaahhhh, I see where you're coming from now Hibs... upon examining the sleeve art just put up on this thread earlier I also noticed that there appears to be a slight imperfection with regard to both the positioning and style of the typography below the picture of the Venus de Milo.... that's something I'm sure Peter Saville would never be so churlish to overlook what with his monumental attention to detail. Come to think of it, it DOES look like it was rather hastily cobbled together. And that's coming from someone who genuinely knows NOTHING about actual graphic design! :)

I've noticed that there have been a number of threads that have been started discussing this very subject - about the best way to repackage the early New Order 12" and 7" singles - but the controversy surrounding the recent Retro release seems to have rendered the whole debate even more chaotic than it already was.

Blimey Steven, that's a pretty formidable list of magic beermats you have there!

Talking of MOST DESIRABLE items what I would have loved to have had was the flip book used in the Blue Monday 1988 video.

Or the dog - now she was an absolute star! (What was her name - does anyone know?) By the way, do you like the pic of my dog Checkers here?? ;)
