Out on the sauce last nite with a workmate who was at Brum Uni in 1980 (he's 41 now, but did NO with me in for the Area:One stuff).

Apparently when Joy Division played Their Last Ever Gig at Brum Uni it wasn't even a decent sized venue it was the Dinner Hall of a Students Campus with a max of a couple of hundred people. (My mate was at Uni there, and didn't bother going despite living there!!!!!!!!!!!(

Cosnider, my mate like's NO but he couldn't even be bothered to attend said (seminal) gig. I hope that puts it into perspective for the wannabees... . .

No, he can't. He wasn't a fan then.

Fan'dom doesn't work like that. Joy Division were a Nothing band playing a Nothing venue. I know lots of manYoo fans but I've mever met one mooynich who's said "I prefer the 68 team with Charlton and Best as opposed to the current team with Beckham and Keane"...

Well, that was until I came here and stomached the colonials with their Digital and Atmosphere chants, songs that can't even mean NISH to them but they like to pretend otherwise.. ..

I've been to the scene of the last JD gig (actually we parked near it before the 85 Tower Ballroom gig (yes I know it's miles away !!), and just had to make a pilgrimage). It's like a school refectory underneath a tower block/hall of residence, with a stage one end and food counters at the other. Typical of the sort of venue they had back then, but almost unimaginable given the way the myth has supposedly become reality. You've only got to look at the list of toilets they did play to see that, as Al says, the real JD live experience was a bit different to the romanticised version, settings wise at least. I've been to several of the venues they played now (YMCA anyone - "legendary" venue that is about as far from the 100 Club as you can get). They'd have been playing The Roadhouse if it had existed then.....

Off track a little but the above comments remind me of one of the TWO Irvine Meadows shows in 1989 (yes, there we TWO, rather than just the one...sandwiched between San Diego and Salt Lake City...

Anyway, some American fan took it upon himself to display a nice sized banner which stated 'New Order WERE Joy Division' and I was actually standing next to Hooky when the same chap asked him for an autograph, but before doing so the American showed Hooky his proud banner.

Hooky's response?

'I know that!'

I went to brum poly & have seen said venue too. it is pants. was strange thinking that my halls of residencs were right by somewhere that had joy division on as their ents though we did get 10,000 maniacs

One of my best mates brothers went to this JD gig at Brum Uni - he would be about 42 or so now and was a student there at the time.

I believe he was dragged along to the gig by a mate as he had never heard of JD before and it wasn't till after this gig and when IC left this mortal coil that he became a fan of JD.

I applied to Brum Uni because of the JD connection and on the guided tour they luckily took us to High Hall. I remember walking along a gallery overlooking the refrectory and assuming that it was the actual venue but not entirely sure so thanks for the confirmation.
