first distinctly new order album

obviously all of their music is their own, and can't be mistaken for anyone else's by any means, but i'm just curious which album you view as being the first one i which they really, really found "their own particular way."

for me, it's power, corruption & lies. songs like Age of Consent and 5 8 6 are some of the first uber-New Order songs for me.

that's an easy one isn't it? "Power, Corruption & Lies" of course ;)

Low-Life for me. To me, Movement is unlistenable, PCL is ok, but Low-Life is the best of the first three albums.

I voted for P, C & L, but maybe Low-Life is "the first total NO album"...both are great.

For my money: PC&L established their sound. Low Life cranked it up a notch. Technique took it to the top.

Power,Corruption & Lies undoubtedly for me. The seeds were sown with the change of direction on Procession, EGG & Temptation etc; culminating with the distinctive sound heard on P,C & Lies.

PCL, not so because it's a complete album (it's not necessarily) but because it's almost a direct break with the more rock-oriented JD days (still lyrically depressive, but musically upbeat to an extent)

Low Life, Barney truly found his confidence on vocals, and the songs are all fantastic, not a weak one in my opinion.

PC&L in my opinion. By the way, what is exactly a New Order sound? I still don't know. :)

Low Life for me. The more I think about it, the more I think of PC&L as a logical follow-up to Closer, and that JD may have done something similar in style as their next LP (with the obvious differences, naturally). Ian's growing obsession with Kraftwerk (leading to KW-1), The Village being similar to Isolation, the increasing use of electronics in JDs music, etc, seems pretty convincing to me. Even stuff like Age Of Consent is stylistically similar to say, LWTUA.

and Ceremony and In A Lonely Place were basically the last songs Joy Division ever wrote. i mean, Ceremony has way more joy than any other JD song, and at least would hint at a more New Order-ish direction.

i went for PC&L. they sound more confident by this time, like they're enjoying themselves more. and you can hear their distinctive sound coming through on this album, whereas movement sounds a bit forced.

Agreed. It's definitely an unusually positive and upbeat number, even lyrically so. Plus JD were due to go on their American tour, and would have probably been exposed to the whole club culture thing a lot earlier had they done so. What effect this would have had on Ian is debatable, but as someone who had an interest in that kind of music, I cannot see how it would have had some influence on him.

i think PC&L definitely wins in this category, although Low-Life is overall better and more consistent.

although i think that 5 8 6 and Age of Consent are better than anything on Low-Life.

i'm just such a sucker for 5 8 6. i don't know why - i just love it to death. it's one of my top five songs of all-time.

for me, Temptation is the first uberNewOrder song. and then, yes, it culminated in PC&L. EGG is INCREDIBLE, but it still doesn't have the total NO feel for me. the sound on it is a bit less polished and it's more immediately post-punk than the sound i think of when i think of NO.
