Seriously, I'm at the limit of the current host, and since I seriously don't like asking money for people, I've been told that with the actual traffic here, I could easily use publicity to pay all the hosting fees.

Now, in 2 years, I wanted to avoid that, I've never tried it, and well, you can see a new order related banner here and there, but only because we think it's good, or because they are helping us for competition, so it's a limited time "publicity" (as you can see with the Rhino banner on top of the treads list)

But, in May, the current hosting will need a renewal, and there has been several problems related to this host (site not accessible between 4 AM to 7 AM for some weird reason.. downtime without any support, etc), I'm not satisfied but you can't beat their price.

Anyways, I'm just testing what people think about it.. I hate it, but I guess we're used to it if it's not annoying and intrusive (if that's a word in english)

Let me know, I sure don't want to squeeze the Salvation Members once more ;)

I know some people offered space, but for obvious reason (modification purpose, be sure everything is up all the time, etc), I'd rather find a way to keep everything in the same place..

(It will be hard to quit such a cheap host though, I'll inquire for the fees to add an extra Gigabyte for NOOL! many sites charges 50 to 99$ US per month for what I'd need, and I'm paying 150$ a year right now (the initial setup cost more, but now that we're all set up.. it's very cheap)

OK, if it's good for NOOL no problem at all. I prefer, as you say in the post, a non-annoying publicity. I hate that horrible Casino banners...uff.

hmmm...banners...not too sure...but if it's what we have to do...

although you would get no problem getting another infusion of cash from me...if that's what we gotta do to keep the site open...

Personally, I hate these pop-up adverts, and have been known to avoid sites containing them. Many people have these pop-up advert killer programs now though, so if it were possible to have a scenario where the pop-ups paid for the site, but a link to a pop-up killer was readily available, then I'm sure people wouldn't object too much. I'd rather send you some money though than have to endure pop-ups !

I don't mind banners, but it's a bit crap when you get new windows opening everywhere.

Banners are fine, I use them on some of the site I run. I hate pop up though, My first reaction when those thing come up is to close them.

I am frequently annoyed by ads on the web which I never read and just distract me from what I'm actually looking for. :mad:

However, as this is one of the finest sites I have had the pleasure to browse, I cannot really object should you decide to go down that road. :nod:

Don't worry.. popups are out of the question, I can't stand them, and since I'm the #1 visitor on this site, I don't want to be annoyed by my own site ;)

As long as it doesn't include the annoying casino ads that pop up everywhere and is vaguely on-topic (record shops etc) it would be fine by me.

I agree with the sentiments regarding pop-ups, especially the ones that refuse to be pulled up (you click and click, but they never open!). Seeing as you're assuring us that much won't be included, I see no problem with it.......

and with that I'd like to buy ad space for my new company, "The Authentic Civil War Recreation Society and Seafood Restuarant"! Fine dining for the whole family, with waiters and cooks dressed in authentic fake Civil War uniforms! Enjoy our fried catfish as General Grant and Lee sign the Appomatox peace agreement one table over! Thrill to Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, right in the comfort of your own booth (John Wilkes Boothe, that is!)! i second that! no shady ads, like lose 100 pounds in 100 days...something stupid like that.

Don't worry!

I'd probably suicide myself before letting that happen, and the same goes for any annoying pop-up advert! We will NEVER tolerate that on NewOrderOnline, nor would we tolerate publicity sent in e-mail to our members. As a matter of fact, we have always refused to sell our members list and always will.

So don't worry!

The publicity we would be aiming for would be record stores, for instance, or anything related to the music industry or, more widely, the entertainment industry, and only fix banners.

i don't know, i like the "purity" (if that is the right word) or this site...

and considering that i was out of town in May when it was salvation time, i'd wouldn't mind chipping in my fair share, if not more

maybe you could give us an example of what you might do???

first of all you´ll have to see if the banners don´t f**k up your design work. if everything´s quite normal then you wouldn´t have to worry. if not then you´ll have to ask yourselves if it´s worth it.

on the other hand I wouldn´t be pleased with email publicity. so I´d recommend keeping the fan´s list out of the business. it could be really annoying because we put our emails in here to recieve news only about new order and not about a casino or whatever.

so, please, I say yes to common banners that don´t f**k up the design. and I say no to annoying banners and mailing lists outside official NOOL lists.

Anything that keeps this wonderful site open & available. I'm with the others on the subject of pop-ups, but if it's good advertising (as seems very likely) of stuff we may actually be interested in, then major cool, go for it.

Its certainly more comprehensive than any other site and is evolving faster and faster. I'd wager it gets more visitors than anyother NO site as well. :)

Still, unfortunatly that potentially still counts for nothing at the end of the day...

That's what I was alluding to - the evolution of this site is phenomenal. I can safely say that I've never seen a better New Order site - there's everything here for everyone, and very little I'd change if I were involved in the production of it.

Wouldn't have thought that would present too much of a problem. A word of caution about fan sites becoming official sites though - they want your soul, as well as turning hours of labour of love into a chore. My football site became official two seasons ago, and all the fun's gone out of it now the "party line" takes precedence over the fan perspective.

I have good news.. it seems that the place where my fiance is working is willing to let NOOL being hosted there.. for the same price I'm paying right now.. but in canadian currency!

This means.. SPACE, and cheaper... so probably a simple salvation member call will do, as it'll cost a simple 12.50$/month for the site (trust me, it's a bargain!)

Don't know when exactly the move will be done, if it will, I still need to know some details about the connection there, but it sure will be a good improvement is that happens, and for the moment, we'll be almost alone on the server.

Let's hope it will be a permanent home for a while.

I'll let you know, this might happen in february or march..

seems you're thinking about doing the publicity thing the right way (music-related, no pop-ups, no casino/weight loss adverts), so i trust you, mate. just keep this excellent site going!

I'd be happy to kick down a few bucks now and then for the operation of this site...I consider it a valuable resource.
