Tha Assiociates/Billy MacKenzie

Off topic I know but does anyone like the music of the Associates & Billy MacKenzie ? Apart from New Order one of my other all time faves (in additon to much good 'new' bands out at momment).

There is a tenuos link between them and New Order though - martha Ladly's painting featured on the Factus 81/82 EP and she was part of the Associates around that time. Also Paul haig (another Billy Mackenzie collaborator) featured Bernard on the "only truth" single off Paul Haigs debut album "Rythm of Life".

Just curious.

I'm a fan and was deeply sadened by Billy's death! I've got two of their albums and wish I had more...

Superb band in their day and BM was one hell of a talent.

KITCHEN PERSON was always a favourite of mine. Came out around 1981.

White car in Germany is one my all-time favourites!

I think "Party Fear's Two" is a great song.

Still play all of the Associates albums that I have (Affectionate Punch, Sulk, and Perhaps) quite a bit.

Hey, at least Warners US (in this case Sire) did something right once upon a time by putting out that splendid compilation of singles and album tracks called Popera, including all of the amazing string of 1981 singles,though I don't think that it's available any more.

Fave songs include Party Fears Two, Tell Me Easter's On Friday, White Car In Germany, and that collaboration with Yello on The Rhythm Divine.

Yeah....White Car In Germany...my fav. Associates track...very haunting, kinda..... but the whole SULK is brilliant anyway.....I remember when I first heard it when i was a tiny schoolboy, and just couldnt understand the songs....neither can I understand them now but yet they sounds great....that voice! that voice! ..that piano ! that piano!..

I even own that CD single HEART OF GLASS...a nice 3 inch disc...

Forgot about that single, very good job on that one Billy! Bought the 12" version with the 3-D cover and green and red glasses with which to view it.

Yes, I have the "Popera" comp. It was released through Warner Europe too. 1991, perhaps?

Correct indeed. Actually, it was kind of hard to believe that Warners US released Popera at all, seeing as Sulk was the only album that was put out at all in the US.

They also did a superb cover of Secret Life of Arabia

The last CD I heard was Beyond the Sun, some of it deeply moving, uplifting and life-affirming. Like Ian, you wonder what goes on in the mind of a suicide? So much to live for........
