I want this to be answered by english speakers but anyone can put his thoughts too. I had this doubt all my life. blue monday.... blue means the color blue? or means something like "sad"? because in argentina translated it "lunes azul". azul means blue, the color. but somehow it didn´t sound right to me. then the 1995 single came and "blau montag" was written on the sleeve. correct me if I´m wrong but blau means the color blue too in german, isn´t it? or does it means sad too?!?!?!? anyone?

'blue' can mean sad or depressed, and i believe this is what it means in this song. dunno about literal translations into other languages. maybe they're just taking artistic liberties. however, best guess is that it means something like 'depressing monday', or something. well, the lyrics are pretty miserable!
also, but not necessarily related to this, 'blue' can refer to pornography, as in 'blue' laws.
I didn't know about the porn connection, but "blue" laws meant that businesses were closed on Sunday so that everyone could be at home or in church. It was like that in Pennsylvania until like 10-15 yrs ago.

'blue' was also a hit song of the silly 'eiffel 65.' wow, what a horrid song. ugh. well, maybe if i was drunk i would enjoy it! and their music videos! thats another whole can of worms...
and i think i saw their cd in hmv for around $6.
actually, i heard that they used to write "Blue Monday" on bombs in World War II (can't remember which nation), and that the slogan of some washing machines/dryers/something in a Kurt Vonnegut book was "goodbye, blue monday!"
so i think it's a reference to something written on machines (like the song itself).
It was the title of an old Billie Holliday (or someone like that) song. Barney tends to get most of his song titles from films, books, graffiti, newspaper headlines.

Actually it is a Fats Domino song. There's also a cover of it by Cat Stevens... which is an admired artist by NO, as we saw on "Back To Mine"... maybe there's a relation.
I may be completly wrong about this, but I heard somewhere that Blue Monday had something to do with Ian Curtis's suicide. Was May 18th on a MOnday ? Again, It's only what I heard.
