Young Offender and Liar suck, Times Change is OK but I can't say more cause I haven't listened to Republic since '94. Regret may be the greatest NO song period, it got my vote in the poll.

You like the female backup singers? You must be the only one in the world. I think they're just way to cheesy and soulful. A lighter female voice would've been fine, but whoever this is is just to diva-like. It doesn't go well with the Neworder sound at all.

yeh, its horribly cheesy. but i think that is the beauty of it..the back-up vocals in crystal are better, but not by much--and the song is etched in my memory because one night at a house party they played *that* song and regret.

sorry..and at that point i was only marginally into new order, that party rekindled my interest in their music..

Uh-huh.....I hope you two are alone..... I really hates those back-up signing....I think it suit songs by other artistes but it is very UN-New Order-like, in my opinion.

Well...the only NO songs with female vocals I like are 'Avalanche' & 'Run Wild'...with Gillian, that is....

I also like backing vocals in Sub-Culture...not in World. I don't like anything in that song.

I hate the backing vocals on Republic too! On Get ready, though, they got it right: Crystal, SLY and Close Range sound great!

Special is great.

backing singers are poop. especially on SLY.

i agree special is a great song, terribly overlook most of the time, i hate subculture with the backing vocals, but i like world with them.

World is one of the most underrated NO songs, for sure.

As is Everyone Everywhere, brilliant track. Gonna go listen to Republic in bed now...

no no the most underrated NO song is As it is when it was one of their best but always overlooked some of barneys best lyrics and on of hooky's top 5 basslines

As It Is is definitly my fav. track off Brotherhood, and it is underrated, but World never gets any recognition of being very, very catchy. (or Hooky? geddit?)

Barney doesn't appear to be that fond of it. He made disparaging remarks after performing it on the Republic tour.

It's a decent tune considering it probably started life as an Other Two demo. I do prefer the Perfecto mix, though.

I thought that I remember Barney comnplimenting himself on the lyrics to World on one of the live recordings that I have....something like..

"Great lyrics on that one"...and he didn't seem sarcastic.

The lyrics are great (don't really care for the chorus...too Pet Shop Boys cynical...Rent and Shopping)...

but the rest is among Barney's best work...

Regret Special Ruined In A Day World Spooky EE

God I loathed this album. I had only discovered New Order three and a half years earlier so I was deeply excited about it, particularly after the brilliant, "Regret," was released. For me the songs that truly reeked were Liar, Chemical, and to a lesser extent World (mostly because of the terrible lyrics and howard background vocalists) Spooky and Ruined in a day. The highlights were Special, Regret, and Everyone Everywhere, and as for Times Change, I absolutely worshipped the music and the lyrics and the chorus, but I did not like the pseudo rapping.

As to the backing vocalists, I found them loathesome as well, they ruined much of Republic, much of Electronics second album, and plenty of other stuff. The only backing vocalist I can tolerate is Gillian who I actually love in terms of vocals. As for the Sub Culture single, I'm one of the few that kind of liked it, even though its a bit cheesy and mellodramatic.

I like the background singers on Get Ready tracks, their dreadful on Subculture but I think they work on a track like World.

Republic is not a bad album, lyrically one of Barney's best. Special is a great track, Time Change is great as well.

Oh c'mon... Young Offender is a great track.

Young Offender was fun to listen to when it first came out, but it doesn't do much of anything for me anymore. I don't think its aged well (at least for me).

I'm not at all impressed with the album lyrically, Barney's lyrical downfall really seemed to begin with this album (this is by no means a continuous process, his lyric writing has always been inconsistent, but rarely ever crap until this album, for me). Regret, and Special were absolutely terrific lyrically, and I also thought Times Change and Everyone Everywhere were pretty solid, but every other song on the album, lyrically was attrocious in my view with only one possible exception (ruined in a day, which is just mediocre in my view). The inconsistent to downright awful lyrics and God awful backing vocals of Raise The Pressure really seem to trace their origins to this album.

However, if you can find some genius in it, more power to you, I wish I could find more to like in it besids Special, and Regret (and to a lesser degree Everyone Everywhere and Times Change).
