Republic of Sept. 11

Okay, I'm sure someone else has posted on this topic since then, but I'm curious to see how many people see this.

When I was listening to "Republic" around the anniversary of Sept. 11, I was struck by how many of the song titles, lyrics and art tie in with the emotions and events connected with the day.

"Regret", "Times Change", "Ruined In A Day", "World (The Price of Love)" all suggest Sept. 11-style change. And the line "Things will never be the same/In Port Royal town ..." Sure it didn't happen in Port Royal, but you get the point. It sends chills up my spine every time.

And what about the album art, suggesting that we are moving from a built up concrete civilization to a world where we will have to exist in oxygen bubbles because we have destroyed the planet?

Um, I'm afraid I don't see this at all...

Now, the Pet Shop Boys 'King's Cross', including the lines 'dead and wounded on either side, you know its only a matter of time' coming out two months before the King's Cross fire - _that_ was spooky.

It's funny...PSB anticipating tragic events, NO making tragic albums 8 years before, etc.

The correlation I have between 9/11 and music is that "Crystal" came out right before then- or after- right near the time. "We're like crystal, we break easy" was a sad comment on the images of the falling towers, and the lines "It was summer, now it's autumn" described both the season and the change from carefree summer to a war nobody understood.

of course the only real link with NewOrder and 9/11 is the Gabriel and Dresden 911 mixes of Someone Like You...started on 9-11-01 and talked about on this forum by Dave Dresden...until he got run off for not being a "real' artist...in hindsight, the mixes of SLY were pretty good.

The only song that really evokes Sept. 11 to me is "Cities will fall" by Elysian Fields on their album "Queen of Meadow" recorded in July 2000 and released in 2001. The chorus goes like this:

You said cities will fall Cities will fall Have no regret in spite of it all As the walls tumble down I won't rest til I've found you

By accident, I listened to this CD in my car on September 11 2001 just a few hours before the planes crashed in New York. By chance, it was a new CD and I hadn't payed attention to the lyrics yet. It was several months later when I realised what they said.

Republic is more influenced by the end of Factory records and even the end of new order as a working partnership, plus that Barney and the group members were starting to feel old, their youth left behind of the new rave, house, hiphop generation, girls starting to look at them as old... ... time passing and changes can be a bummer

REM made a great cover of this song wich was released in September 1991... just 10 years before.

When my mum phoned me and screamed "world war 3 has started" I was just coming to the end of listening to an orbital concert. A little bit of calculation revealed that at the moment the planes started hitting things I was listening to "Impact--the Earth is burning" It's one of the things that has stuck with me from that terrifying time, to this day I cannot listen to that song without leaving the TV on, lest some other horror sneak up on me. As for Republic, it's very much about the end of factory, bitterness towards Tony and the death of the magic in the band.

Impact (earth is burning) is awesome in its own right. i've always felt strong emotions listening to that track. are you the webmaster at loopz.co.uk?

Hmm, sadly I am not affiliated with Loopz, wish I was, I'd love to get the chance to pick the chaps brains on some of their tunes. I do have a fairly crappy realaudio of new orleans I think ( or maybe SF) that I got from Loopz about 2 years ago. Well, I felt like I wasted the money I spent to get all those remixes...
