N.O. on your HI-FI

Just curious as to what equiptment everybody listens to their favorite band on. Mine is: Adcom GFP-555II preamp Adcom GFP-545II amp Paradigm Moniter 9 speakers Yamaha CDC-585 cd changer Sony DVD Technics really old turntable with stickers all over the dust cover. Grado zt+ cartridge. Audioquest Turquoise interconnects Audioquest Type-4 speaker cable.

I love it all, but wouldn't mind a nice turntable and cartridge. I have tried to update my speakers, but can't find anything sounding as good for a decent price. I love their sound, but they look boring and kinda big for my room.

What you got???

I don't know what your price range is, but the recent Wharfedale speakers sound nice and are a really good deal. There are lots in interesting speakers on the market these days. Someday I hope to get a pair of Quad II mono amps, Quad ESL speakers and one of those high end turntables with the clamping system. Redtrumpet.com has some interesting components to browse through, looking over the speakers they have might give you some ideas.

What is this "Hi-Fi" of which you speak?

Wow, I apologize to Mr. Lehman for my stupidity, arrogance and bafoonness(or is it bafoonity). I was way off base asking a group of persons, whom share the love of our favorite band, if they share something else with me. That something else is building a "HI-FI" to listen to our favorite band on. I agree with Mr. Lehman, in that I have spent all of my life listening to music on what I can afford and the entire time, it has been "just fine". Again, I apologize for wanting to find out who else may share this hobby.

Lawrence I think you are absolutely right to ask this question - I was thinking of posting a similar query myself.

I'm constantly amazed at the number of people who spend truck loads of money on CD's, records etc and then listen to their prized music collection on a piece of junk midi system.

A lot of people have never experienced a proper "separates" based Hi-Fi system. With a decent system listening to a New Order album is like actually being in the studio with the band. You can tell Hooky's on the right, Barney on the left etc - close your eyes and you're there ! As for the piece of shit systems most people have - you may as well be sitting in a car driving past the studio at 60mph !!

Hi-Fi is a great a hobby as it gets you closer to the music you love. Also before anyone says Hi-Fi is too expensive I buy all my gear second hand - there's some great bargains out there. For example in my current setup Marantz 63 Ki Signature Mk.2 CD Player (price originally new £500, mine was second hand in mint condition for £100).

Cheap mods can bring huge benefits - want to hear Hooky's bass ? Get some speaker stands and fill them with sand and stick the speakers to them using Blu-Tak. Want to hear Steve's hi-hats ? Biwire your speakers with normal electrical solid core cable running to the tweeters. I could go on - this may sound boring - but I can tell that the effect on the music IS NOT.

Get down to your local second hand Hi-Fi dealer - you know it makes sense !

Total class here, the LP12 is indeed a great audiophile turntable but it's not easy to listen to those 45rpm 12" we all like on this turntable

On a slightly different subject which N.O recordings do people think are the most Hi-Fi ? For myself whilst "Movement" is not the best New Order album it is the best sounding - with an admirably clean production. Of the more modern recordings "Technique" is perhaps my favourite.

The Durutti Column are the Factory band to look to for audiophile recordings - the following are some of the best sounding:-

"The Return of The Durutti Column" - clean and simple "When the World" (Newson Mix) - actually hear Vini's fingers moving ! "Time was gigantic ... when were kids" - great modern production

Also on Factory check out Crispy Ambulance "The Presence" - possibly Martin Hannett's best production job. Also Section 25's "From the Hip" LP, produced by Barney, is highly recommended.

as i'm staying with my folks at the moment, i'm listening to my CDs on the first CD player i ever bought (which i gave to them when i was in college and they managed to hang on to), which i got 12 years ago and which is now, once again, in my room. it's hooked up to the same portable i had back then, as well. and the silly thing still works. gorgeous little simple creature.

last new order-related CD played on the CD player: electronic's first album, this afternoon.

What I've been trying to say for several posts is:

NAD 712 amp, NAD 517 5-CD player, NAD 512 DVD player, Bose Interaudio loudspeakers.

Maybe not the highest fi, but very good yet.

A fuckin' huge Pioneer Soundsystem. I don't rememer its number, but it has a very good and loud sound, give me extreme hearing plesures and headache to my neighbours.

Specially when cames to listen to marvelous and enjoyable fine-civilized music such as Sex Pistols, Pixies and - why not, let's disturb them all!!! - Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

I have one of those pain in the arse adaptors but when the Valhalla power supply goes I will be replacing it with a Lingo which enables you to play 45s.

Mostly I listen to my Ford 6006 6xCD Changer (when it hasn't been nicked;) )

Currently listening to LWTUA on my Labtec PC system, complete with "Richter" bass box :D

Its my first seperates hi-fi system and was constructed on a budget, but it pisses all over my previous JVC mini system.

i dunno the exact model numbers but i could ask... as for me, i'm a portable guy, and i mainly listen to music on my Sony D-777 or D-EJ915 discmans with my Grado SR60 headphones or my Sony MDR-7506 studio monitors, depending on what mood i'm in. cheers.

I don't know the model, but my local stereo shop just started carrying a Mordaunt Short bookshelf subwoofer 5.1 channel thing. They played a James Taylor DVD-A disc and the speakers sounded great, although I am not convinced that multichannel music is the way to go.

As for your Project, that is one 'table I am consedering purchasing, along with Rega and MMF.

The Project is a decent TT, exceptionally good for the money. Don't think that model is available anymore, but if you can find one 2nd hand, look out for one with an Ortofon MC1 Turbo Cartridge - the sound is almost indistinguishable from CD.

Rega Planar 3 & RB300 arm is the way to go, the deck is suoerb and the arm is even used in some Linn LP12 set ups.
