Thanx -1, you are a star. I managed to download TPK from your alternate site no problems. Listening to it now and it sounds great! Any more? (he says greedily rubbing his hands together).

_new_order_the_perfect_kiss(video)_vs_the_perfect_kiss(retro)_

'i know, you know'

ok neworder's,

as mentioned before, both of these versions are somewhat similar at first,

but there are differences...

i would rate them as such:

the perfect kiss (video):

audio quality [from laserdisc] : bass - very good treble - ok, has hissing, and high frequencies at times

vocals - clear and distinct volume - very good instrumentation - excellent

overall performance - excellent

the perfect kiss (retro):

audio quality [from cd] : bass - very good treble - very good

vocals - seems sometimes low, but mostly clear volume - very good instrumentation - excellent

overall performance - very good

bottom line

i still prefer the original video version over retro

although the 'new' recording been in the vaults since '85 (18 years or so)...its very cool to be able to hear yet another interpretation on it..

i think i've listened to the original so many times, this one seems like almost a new version of it.. but i'm very disappointed in bernards vocal performance as the words come off very weak, and quiet... somewhat subdued...

i think that's why they didn't use that version for the final take of the video...

if you haven't heard the original video version, get that one, and compare them..

(i wonder if the video for the 'retro' version exists somewhere?)

for all the minor details see below...

the perfect kiss (video)vs [outtake]

time notes vocals

pre-vocal section

[video] [1st - pre-vocal section] 9:13-7:44 [1min29sec]

  • -09:13 [silence]
  • -09:09 [drum 1]
  • -08:54 [drum 2]
  • -08:40 [guitar 1]
  • -08:21 [keyboard 1]
  • -07:44 [keyboard 2]

[retro] [1st - pre-vocal section] 9:53-8:28 [1min25sec]

  • -09:53 [silence]
  • -09:52 [drum 1]
  • -09:38 [drum 2]
  • -09:23 [guitar 1]
  • -09:05 [keyboard 1+guitar]
  • -08:50 [keyboard 2]
  • -08:28 [keyboard 3+guitar]

very similiar intros.... the drumbeats are about the same duration, the keyboards start the same..

in the retro version, the keyboards are much more predominant in the mix...as are the guitars

vocal section verse 1

[video] [2nd - vocal section verse 1] 7:29-6:30 [59sec]

  • -07:29 [vocal] I stood there beside myself
  • -07:25 [vocal] Thinking hard about the weather
  • -07:22 [vocal] Then came by a friend of mine
  • -07:18 [vocal] Suggested we go out together
  • -07:14 [vocal] Then I knew it from the start
  • -07:11 [vocal] This friend of mine would fall apart
  • -07:07 [vocal] Pretending not to see his gun
  • -07:04 [vocal] I said "let's go out and have some fun"
  • -07:00 [vocal] I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
  • -06:52 [vocal] I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
  • -06:46 [guitar+keyboard]
  • -06:30 [keyboard 1+guitar]

[retro] [2nd - vocal section verse 1] 8:13-7:15 [58sec]

  • -08:13 [vocal] I stood there beside myself
  • -08:10 [vocal] Thinking hard about the weather
  • -08:06 [vocal] Then came by a friend of mine
  • -08:02 [vocal] Suggested we go out together
  • -07:59 [vocal] Then I knew it from the start
  • -07:55 [vocal] This friend of mine would fall apart
  • -07:51 [vocal] Pretending not to see his gun
  • -07:48 [vocal] I said "let's go out and have some fun"
  • -07:44 [vocal] I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
  • -07:36 [vocal] I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
  • -07:30 [guitar+keyboard]
  • -07:15 [keyboard 1+guitar]

here we see the beginning of the differences,

retro - right before the vocals start, a guitar is heard much more clearly...and bernards voice is much softer..at times you can't hear the 'i know, you know' lines..

the keyboards drown him out at times..

video - the vocals are much more distint, bernards voice is crisper, and much clearer.. however at times, there is some clipping of the high frequencies...also, he seems to be slurring 'land of love...' law?

vocal section verse 2

[video] [3rd - vocal section verse 2] 6:16-5:39 [37sec]

  • -06:16 [vocal] I have always thought about
  • -06:13 [vocal] Staying in and going out
  • -06:09 [vocal] Tonight I should have stayed at home
  • -06:05 [vocal] Playing with my pleasure zone
  • -06:00 [vocal] He has always been so strange
  • -05:57 [vocal] I'd often thought he was deranged
  • -05:54 [vocal] Pretending not to see his gun
  • -05:50 [vocal] I said "let's go out and have some fun"
  • -05:47 [vocal] I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
  • -05:39 [vocal] I know, you know, we believe in a land of love

[retro] [3rd - vocal section verse 2] 7:00-6:22 [38sec]

  • -07:00 [vocal] I have always thought about
  • -06:56 [vocal] Staying in and going out
  • -06:52 [vocal] Tonight I should have stayed at home
  • -06:48 [vocal] Playing with my pleasure zone
  • -06:44 [vocal] He has always been so strange
  • -06:40 [vocal] I'd often thought he was deranged
  • -06:37 [vocal] Pretending not to see his gun
  • -06:33 [vocal] I said "let's go out and have some fun"
  • -06:29 [vocal] I know, you know, we believe in a land of love
  • -06:22 [vocal] I know, you know, we believe in a land of love

retro - the bass guitar, and the drum claps seem quieter in this mix... and bernards voice seems to be higher in...'i have always..'
you do hear 'pleasure zone' very clearly though..

once again, the chorus of 'i know, you know' is drowned out by the keyboards..

video - the vocals are much sharper and clearer, and there's a more consistent level in bernards voice, along with a few 'oohs' from him..

vocal section verse 3

[video] [4th - vocal section verse 2] 5:32-5:04 [28sec]

  • -05:32 [vocal] when you are alone at night
  • -05:29 [vocal] you search yourself for
  • -05:27 [vocal] all the things that you believe are right
  • -05:25 [vocal] if you give it all away
  • -05:22 [vocal] you throw away your only chance
  • -05:19 [vocal] to be here today
  • -05:17 [vocal] then a fight breaks out on your street
  • -05:14 [vocal] you lose another broken heart in a land of me(at?)
  • -05:10 [vocal] my friend has took his final breath
  • -05:07 [vocal] now i know the perfect kiss
  • -05:04 [vocal] is the kiss of death

[retro] [4th - vocal section verse 2] 6:15-5:47 [28sec]

  • -06:15 [vocal] when you are alone at night
  • -06:12 [vocal] you search yourself for
  • -06:10 [vocal] all the things that you believe are right
  • -06:07 [vocal] if you give it all away
  • -06:04 [vocal] you throw away your only chance
  • -06:02 [vocal] to be here today
  • -06:00 [vocal] then a fight breaks out on your street
  • -05:57 [vocal] you lose another broken heart in a land of me(at?)
  • -05:53 [vocal] my friend has took his final breath
  • -05:50 [vocal] now i know the perfect kiss
  • -05:47 [vocal] is the kiss of death

retro - another subdued vocal for this verse, almost like bernards whispering the words.. once again, it seems rather muted..

video - bernards maintains the strong vocal delivery for this verse, also some of the keyboard notes stand out more clearly...

instrumental ending

[video] [5th - instrumental ending] 5:02-0:00 [5min02sec]

  • -05:02 [keyboard 3+guitar]
  • -04:54 [guitar solo]
  • -04:25 [keyboard chords 2+cowbell+drum pad]
  • -04:18 [cowbell solo]
  • -04:04 [spacey sound]

retro - the keyboard solos are different, the orchestral chords don't quite sound so sharp... the cowbells aren't as loud..

there's several different effects that sound different, the explosions, the spacey sounds...

the guitar solos, and the interleaving of them near the end with the bass sound quite different too..not quite as complex and compelling...

its still a very good ending though..

video - theres quite a few differences here, almost all the keyboard solos are different,

the chords sound somewhat similar, the cowbell is sharper and more consistent in this version...and the weird spacey sounds have a longer duration in this version..

many of the complex guitar parts and solos are quite different, especially near the end when bernard is playing..

crisp, clear drums, and a strong metallic beat go throughout the ending..

overall, a very strong finish

both versions are great, however, i still prefer the original video version...

'i know, you know'

ok neworder's,

just for the sake of completion,

here are the details for the editted
substance version of 'the perfect kiss'...

it contains all the verses from the 12", however there is a slight difference in the ending..

you can find it on various 'substance' releases and 'international' (i think)..
