Thanks to Donovan, I got to see this cracker of a video again for the last couple of nights. The copy I own had lost the sound quality, probably due to playing it too much, but thankfully I have a great copy now.
I hadn't seen it fer ages, and was taken back in time watching it again, it was fucking fantastic hearing the old stuff, and after 2002's remixes of Confusion, I have fallen in love with this track again, a great version on PFD
Seeing them play Subculture again was brilliant, I'd love to see them play this again (but then again, there's loads of old stuff we'd all like to see again
)
Gotta say I love the version of We All Stand as well, this was a song I never got to see live, but hearing it live took me back to 1988 when I purchased PCL as a sweet and innocent 13 year old;)
Sunrise just Rocks every time you hear it, and the version of AIIWIW with the different lyrics is a touch for the collectors. Thoroughly enjoyed revisiting the vid again.
Also thanks to Marian for the near perfect quality of the Leuven 85 concert, again another great concert, and one of the rare times Let's Go was played, personally I prefer this version to the one with the lyrics, I remember lending the Salvation soundtrack from Uncly John, and being amazed that I liked an instrumental, I've never been a massive fan of Elegia etc...
And with the band playing Atmosphere, long before it was reintroduced in 98, was good to see, although I think most people will agree that the versions of JD songs they do these days are a helluva lot better than back then
Just wish I was old enough to have been at a few of the gigs around that time.

I've got that also but on Beta videotape and the player won't play all tapes anymore. I think the rubber takeup wheel got old with age and won't grab. Same as the rubber brake on a fishing reel, need to rough it up with sandpaper so it will grab again. Won't attempt that til I get my DVD-R recorder. Then can transfer a ton of music videos and live concerts that I got cheap at a Videostore closeout sale. Trouble is they are mostly Beta. Urgh A Music War, Thompson Twins-Live and videos, Joy Division, a ton of stuff I haven't seen in years and don't know if will ever make it to DVD or any time soon.

A lot of people I know have already started the transition of sending all their New Order / Joy Division stuff onto DVD, I haven't even got a dvd player yet
The Japanese DVD of this is on my wish list, but the £35 that it's going to cost keeps putting me off, especially as it's just the same as the vid, ie no bonus stuff.

I just picked up a copy of the DVD for $21...still waiting for it to arrive. I have the video but hate to play it as I don't want it to degrade/break.
Im sure it will appear in Tower Records as an import for some stupid price and what with me being seemingly unable apply normal pricing common sense when purchasing NewOrder stuff i will no doubt buy it on sight (anyone else know that feeling!?), take it home pile it up next to 316 and 511 and never watch it because i've got it on video and it would require the extra effort of swapping the scart lead from my video to my dvd player!!
Oh and the quote of the gig for me is...

My VHS is well worn out as well, but I'm putting back buying a DVD player untill recorders come out. I did, however, transfer it to tape some years ago (before CD-Rs became a comodity), and it makes an excellent live album, makes me wonder why would anyone release substandard stuff like the BBC live.
Hey, Shugsy.....email me your addy if you want a digital version of PFD...I've got the Video CD version of that and can copy it for you on CD-R ( since I still owe you a favour from the Academy vid ) ...and the pic is brilliant, not to mention it wont fade from numerous playback......the only thing is that you can only view this VCD on your DVD player or ( probably ) on the CD-Rom in your computer.

Anybody know why Bernard was so pissed off exactly when they were playing Sunrise? Did he kick the mike to the kick drum? Did you see Steve's glare at the cameraman backstage after they finished Sunrise?
I wish they had footage of the first night of the Japanese concert. It would have been interesting to see that set in comparison with the one on PFD.

Agreed, a great rendition of this song. My Uncle John had this on audio (like someone mentioned above) and it was probably the first bootleg I heard, I have and will, always be fond of this concert.

The thing is Steve was really kicking the drums too hard, breaking Barney's concentration. When he says "down" he's not talking to Steve, but to the sound guys, asking them to turn down the drum mic. As long as they seem not to understand, Barney does the job himself.
Pumped Full Of Drugs really was my New Order coming out party. I knew who they were, Brotherhood had come out and I really liked that. It was just before Substance was released and a friend of mine said he had this video of New Order live in Japan, so I thought I would check it out.
I was blown away, not by the performances or the music. but by the attitude.
the constant verbal abuse of the crowd, Bernard kicking the crap out of the bass drum mike. It was from that moment on i had to find out as much as I could about this band. And for the past 16 years i've been hooked.
85 was my favourite year for New Order gigs - so many of them were so similar in attitude to the PFD video. It's a pity that the rest of the set didn't make it onto the video though.

Speaking of which... I have this really lo-fi wav-file (I'm talking 64 kbps/8kHz mono here) which many moons ago I downloaded from God knows where, labelled "Sister Ray phantom encore 010585". It's a really messy version which starts from chaos, going on in the background while some Jap chap is urging the crowd to remain in their seats (this could only happen in Japan, right?). I know May 1st is the day prior to the PFD gig, but perhaps this feat was repeated the next day? Does anybody know whether more songs were played & excluded from the video?

I know I've said this before, but how much greater would PFD have been if they'd included those three missing tracks? Who decided to leave these off anyway? Arguably three of their best tunes!
I managed to find my old recorded-off-ITV version of this the other night and watched it (in glorious mono thru a home cinema amplifier !), complete with the old Thames TV trailer and some mad adverts in between each songs.
Fantastic set - bearing in mind when they played this gig LowLife hadn't even come out, yet they played 5 tracks from it !
Happy days - managed to pick it up on eBay for a fiver today so I'll at least have a stereo copy :)

PFD is brilliant, it is the essence of New Order in my view, what their all about.
Being 22 now, I do wish I was born earlier so I could have gone to gigs around that time, that attitude, they were just ON, simple as that.
PFD's attitude is what New Order started with Blue Monday - a subtle fuck you to the world.

The intensity of the show is fantastic. What a difference from the Taras show. What also really struck me was the number of close up head shots.
I didn't remember the "kill 'em all" tshirt on Hooky...wasn't that a Metallica album?
