I'm sitting here watching it for the first time in nearly 20 years and it's bloody superb. Hooky's currently trying to swallow the microphone while giving it some on the six string. For a moment there it actually looks like it's stuck in his gob!
TARAS SHEVCHENKO reminds me of the special band New Order once WERE.

One of my favorite moments is when Barney, Hooky and Stephen are all lined up with Hooky having his back to the audience and the three are all jamming hard together.... very cool.

They're STILL a special band. Maybe I'm too fucking stupid, but I prefer the kick-ass live band in wich NewOrder turned into in the 21 years between Taras and 511...

i have to agree with EGG. they seem so much more comfortable on stage now than they did back in '81 (from what i've seen of them from that period), or at least like they're having more fun with the audience...and the music just keeps getting better and better!
Having collected many of the live gigs and tv stuff over the years I would have to go for the performances of the mid 80's maybe it's me being nostalgic, as I was too young to have been at any of the gigs, but with the performances you never knew what you were gonna get, as they said themselves in a fe interviews, one night they would be ok, the next night shite, and the night after even worse
plus you had the difference in set-lists, don't get me wrong, the performances since Liverpool have been pretty good, but I'm sure people would like to see the raw energy and the "What's gonna fuck up next" part of the gig. Taras and the early New Order TV stuff (Celebration, Switch & Riverside) are brilliant to watch again.....and again.....and again, you can see how scared they are
Hearing Truth / ICB / Senses / Chosen Time / EGG / Temptation...... in all their glory reminds me that I wish I was a few years older and wealthier
Yeah, but now, Barney can't be himself.. he can't sing with his eyes closed now.. he needs a teleprompter..

they may be more polished now...but I think they were better back then...but I'm a half wit...so what the hell do I know!!!!
For me the whole randomness of early NO performances (well, for me that really meant 1985-1987) was what was so darned attractive about them.
Their mini-tours (particularly the early 1986 one) were just perfect in every way : different sets, different cock ups, a lot of banter and some real surprises (LWTUA at Poole Arts Centre : always holds a special memory for me that gig - I'll never forget spending the night in Poole Bus Station waiting for a coach to take me to London at 3 a.m in the morning, because I couldn't get a B & B).
They might be more polished and chatty now, but back then they were just so amateurish, it was totally endearing :)
Taras is brilliant, the best bit about it would have to be Steve, he really goes for it, especially in Denial where the sweat completely rains off him. His sweat could well be responsible for Barneys electric shock off the mike :D
taras is excellent, i remember doing the same thing last summer, hadn't listened to it in years and was just transfixed through the whole thing
the version of temptation still sounds really fresh 20 odd years on..from someone who plays and makes techno,it's easy to see why all the detroit techno producers rate new order so highly..taras is superb - raw
I've said it before, I'm sure, but the version of Temptation on there is great (who cares if he hasn't quite got the lyrics worked out?). I absolutely fuckin' love that whole concert. 
yeah, Taras is a great show. lots of the good olden stuff like Ceremony, EGG, and stuff off Movement. unfortunately, my copy of it is out of synch (by at least a bloody second), so it kinda spoils it for me. oh well...

This kind of misses the epoint of what early NO were all about - it was about things that were more important than all the usual 'rock 'n roll' crap, it wasn't about having 'fun' - go and see Kajagoogoo if you wanted 'fun' - the intensity they had in that period is plain to see in the Taras performance, as it was when I saw them first in Glasgow in early '81. Sure, the 85/86 gigs were good but in a different way - more a celebration, but to my eyes & ears, not as special, more normal. They were a great band in 85 but live, in 1981, they were just on a different plane. I think you probably had to live through the whole JD, IC death, Ceremony, Peel session thing to be in that emotional place at that time, and it might not make sense looking at it retrospectively, which is why I guess so few fans rate Movement.

1.Is Barney's guitar in Ceremony in T S the same he plays the same song at Finsbury 2002 ?
2.I observed at the beggining of Dreams never end that the camera man thought Barney would sang the song.He gave Barney a close :D.

from repeatedly watching it seems like the most logical reason, it is quite hilarious and unexpected, something like Ian would do without the shock :D
I know this performance dates from 1981, but what is the track listing on it? Was it pre- or post- Movement material?

Sorry.But LWTUA was played live by New Order in Birmigham 1983 and as soundcheck an instrumental version in 1981.

You're right, LWTUA, but I'd say the JD mystique was still there in '84.
I think TS sees New Order at the very moment when they snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. The singer / lyricist / icon is dead - long live the beat. It's the point when 'indie' becomes 'dance', black and white finds colour and 'Manchester' breathes in 'New York.
I'm proud to have loved the band then and still fancy the occasional shag now.
when does barney get that shock? I have 316, and I've seen it many times, but really haven't noticed it before I read about it hear. Still don't know when that happens?
Fantastic blast of nostalgia, but for me the best bit is the keeping up the tradition started on Still of getting the product labelling wrong !

in the middle of temptaion. he goes towards the mic, leaps back, waves his arms and stares evilly at the monitor engineer. (who almost certainly told him what our engineer told us when we were in the states and I got a twinge from a mic "aw for fucks sake dry your eyes....it's only 110V, it won't kill you")
