I think Joy Division may be eligible next year (I think), unless I have the eligibility requirements completely wrong. Doubtful of an induction though---they still haven't inducted the Sex Pistols, even though the Clash just got it.
Would be curious and nice if it did happen (for Joy Division that is).
Artists become eligible 25 years after their debut album, so it means 2004 for Joy Division but I doubt it will ever happen. No way!
i can't imagine JD ever being inducted, although with the clash and elvis costello and the attractions this year they're recognising some good artists....
Depends I guess if they consider only Joy Division.
It has been an influence, but the band was there for 3 years only...
If they consider New Order as well, that's another story, because of Blue Monday.
But then, I don't think this will happen... and who cares ;)
I can't see JD or the Jam getting in because they never got popular over here. I think Elvis Costello and the Police got in more for what they did later in their careers than for the punk and I think the Clash got in for London Calling. I'll be surprised if NewOrder gets in.

I'm not sure how the dates and eligibility issues would work with these guys, but I'd like to count it collectively and start it with JD.
If the Hall of Fame is trying to represent British punk and new wave, Joy Division/New Order certainly deserve inclusion based on their quality and the pervasive and varied reach of their influence.
Where does the Police's lineage go? Hardly anywhere. And Sting despised punk, he just used the scene for his own ambition. They get inducted with the Clash and Elvis because they sold a bunch of records. Yet Joy Division knock-offs have collectively sold far more records than the Police have. I predict that in 2005, U2 will be inducted, and JD's sound will get in and credited to the band that most lucratively copied it. The vast majority of American listeners have no clue where it came from.

The Velvet Underground got elected, and most 70s rock fans have never heard of them, so every once in a while a "critical" selection like The Clash might get by (at least they had a few minor hit singles in by the end), but this is rare... but Joy Division would be very doubtful (and going by what they have done, they will consider New Order to be a different band)
the concept of the Hall is just to exploit and sell nostalgia for popular rock bands, and it will be very hard to believe that they will be able to change gears and properly deal with indie rock, hip-hop, the dance scene and all the endless offshoots... the Hall is probably nearing the end of its rather silly relevence, since the mega-popular career spanning rock band pretty much died out after the 70s. I guess they can elect U2 and REM in a few years...? maybe Metallica... then maybe Red Hot chjili Pepers, Smashing pumpkins, Nirvana, Pearl Jam in another decade but what about till then... will they elect Rick Rubin?... Dr. Dre? Grandmaster Flash for a few singles? Arthur Baker? Husker Du? what about later ...Pavement? Guided by Voices? Aphex Twin? how will they generate money with the middle aged American "rock" fan with some money.... with New Order? not likely... the whole thing is kinda silly
This Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is just a marketing tool to keep older music fans still interested, to make them feel the choices they made 25 years ago about whom they liked the best are completely justified and they can feel a little smug. It probably generates a bit of profit in the re-releasing of CDs with 2 extra unreleased tracks to the already converted but it must leave the new generation of music fans cold. Who are these "Hall-dwellers" to think they have the right to say one artist is holier than another? I make my own judgements - ditto The Brit Awards, The Brat Awards, Mercury Music Prize, Grammys, eMpTV. They should scrap the lot, melt the awards down for money to build a decent recording studio somewhere and fund bands struggling financially to make a debut album.
I'm on the fence as to whether I even want JD in the Hall. Sure, it would be nice for them to get some recognition stateside (certainly more than they've gotten so far), but the very relevance of the Hall itself is questionable. By the time they get done inducting all the one-hit wonders of the 60s, is there gonna be room for anyone else?
It seems that the Hall goes for easy selections, the most obvious being The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Rolling Stones, etc. Very rarely have they chose to honor an act that DIDN'T have a hit sometime before the beginning of punk. As obsessed with the past as I am myself, I think it's fair to say the Hall members are living in the past, the far, far, far, far, far-off past.
I'm glad Elvis Costello and the Clash made it in (you can't explain punk without those two), but I'd be surprised if the other punk acts made it in. The Pistols would've been a shoe-in if they were really looking to honor punk, I think EC and the Clash were put in for their later stuff (as someone said earlier).
As for a recognition of JD/NO as a whole in the Hall, that might be more feasible than seperate inductions (after all, the Hall can't ignore "Blue Monday" forever, can they?)

Well said, I'll second that. Awards are for the industry big-cheeses to crack one off to.
The HOF is as much of a joke as the grammy awards and all that other crap. the only reason the clash made it is probably because joe died, which makes it a bit late, I think. Granted, it,s good to see the police play live again. Joy division will never get in because the "public" doesn't even know who they are.
