I was going through my old bootleg cassettes and found one from Hemel Hempstead Pavilion Theatre, 8 Nov 1985 (this was an "I was there" gig).
On it is the very first public airing of Bizarre Love Triangle, with minimal lyrics (a few "every time I see your face"s mentioned but little else).
The quality is a bit iffy, but definitely listenable. Would folk be interested in an .mp3 of it ?

Too right as i always liked the early takes on songs.This would be a fine addition to this site.I could then put it to CD-R and send it back to you with loads of ROCKET SPECIALS!Refusal doesn't offend!

I've got a mixer of the same gig.
Fucking brilliant clayts! I love hearing these work-in-progress versions of songs. The intro is great, I'd prefer a little instrumental inlay before Barney's vocals (on the B'hood version, not Substance). *Sigh* Another "Damn me for being an American and born 15 years too late".

Since I don't have a very substantial collection of live material its great to hear these!
I think that someone suggested a list of "first played"...maybe someone could post the MP3's of these so that we could all enjoy them.
BTW don't you think that its odd that NO is so careful with their "official" releases but seems to have little problem playing early/unfinished versions of songs live?

They used to play unfinished versions live. Nowadays (and indeed since 1988) the songs have been finished and recorded before we get to hear them live. I think they've changed the way they record stuff, plus of course they are now "more professional" and don't leave anything to chance in a live setting.

I'll see if I've got any more (I suspect I will have in my extensive cassette collection) - I'll compare my list of bootlegs with the list of debuts on the site and see what else I can do - I know I do have the WOMAD version of State of the Nation (Barney called it Shame of the Nation) from July 1985 - pretty sure I've got a load more too :)
Okay, I was wrong about State of the Nation : it was debuted at the Hac.

What's the consensus on me making these available then ?
I was planning one of these a few months ago, including all the older songs as well, but it got sort of put on the backburner for a while.
I actually had a copy of the soundcheck of this show (which we were eventually thrown out of) and the press and play version (without anything on top) sounded outstanding. Just wish I knew where the bloody tape was.
If anyone out there can remember we were sitting upstairs hiding but they still bloody found us. This used to be a prime ploy for getting in for bugger all. Get in early and keep your head down.
The last gig of the 1984 shows at Heaven was a massive sell out so I told all my mates to get there early and got them all in at around 2pm and we played pool all afternoon until the doors opened.
Heaven was one of the best gigs despite Barney turning down my offer of wearing one of my JD or Kraftwerk T-shirts. Tight as hell in there. Goodness knows what how many people were in that place that night and what a superb party afterwards. Morrrisey, Cab Volitaire and the first occasion I spoke with Pete Saville. Star. DM

I've got a copy of that soundcheck on tape, and a copy of BLT from the s/c on CD, thanks to Steve Waller :)

OMG...18 years ago.
The Hemel Dacorum is a good venue and used to have a few good bands on. Before everyone plumbed for big London venues rather than the smaller regional ones. U2, Siouxie and the Banshees to name a few. I also saw U2 in St Albans on the Boy tour long with The Talking Heads (one of my first ever gigs), Ultravox on the Vienna tour, Echo and The Bunnymen, Cab Volitaire. Herts was a once happening place ;o) DM

The Pavilion has recently been closed down, sadly.
Dave - you mentioning Heaven - that is a great show! I wasn't there, but knowing the time of year and the venue it must have been sweltering....
And to think I saw the live debut of Sooner Than... at Leeds as well as Perfect Kiss and BLT

David, I was born and bred in St Albans - lived there for 23 years before defecting to the East Midlands :)
The first ever gig I went to was at St Albans City Hall (before they funked it up as the Arena) - yeah, okay, it was Wishbone Ash ffs, but I was only 16 :)
I also saw Pete Murphy (and The Bolshoi) just after Bauhaus split up (also met my first girlfriend, Tracy, there, although she was with her beau at the time).
I'm gutted that HH Pavilion has gone - at least I can say I was there for the debut of one of the best NO songs going (and most popular, if the charts here at NOOL are correct, which they clearly are :) )

No worries, boss - I've got so many free bits of web space dotted around the globe, it won't be a problem.
