Forgot I had this... JD : FORM (and substance) book

I was digging around in some cardboard boxes in my attic as I was hunting for the Mark Johnson book, when I stumbled across something I didn't even know I had.

It's an A4 sized paperback book, written by Clinton Heylin and Craig Wood in 1988 about Joy Division called FORM (and substance). It's published by Sound Publishing, ISBN 1 871407 00 1 (apparently there is a hard back version too, ISBN 1 871407 01 X).

The first section is a history of JD. The second section records all of their recorded material, including the dates of recording sessions and live bootlegs.

The third section is a selection of black and white photographs by Kevin Cummins. There are also some wedding photos, which I assume are of Ian and Deborah (quality is appalling).

Rather bleakly, the last page is a negative of Ian's death certificate.

Anyone else got this book ?

Yeah, I've got it, too (softcover); bought it in the spring of '89. I think it's a very good book. It was the very first time I saw a reference to Pere Ubu as influences on the music of Joy Division.

I also recall reading the pages with setlists over and over again (there once was a time when that kind of information was not widely accessible...) and thinking how much I'd love to hear all those tapes (it was just before I started swapping).

And yes, the wedding pictures are of Ian and Deborah. Seeing how the band members have always guarded off their private lives, I imagine somebody made a decent amount of money leaking those...

I've never seen this book - will have to have a look on E-bay !

I'll see if I can photocopy it for you... but I'd hate to break the book's back, so don't go jumping around with joy (;)) just yet!

Talking of eBay, I see someone is doing a BuyItNow on An Ideal For Living by Mark Johnson for a staggering £99.

No-one here would pay that would they ?

And yes, it certainly is photocopiable - not that many pages of text, and all of the photos (bar the wedding snaps) are readily available elsewhere.

I'm quite sure that's not Steve. Looks more like Ian's best man (one Kelvin Briggs, according to "Touching from a Distance").

All in all, the book counts about 65 pages. The amount is no issue. I just don't wanna destroy the book through photocopying. But in the office, we have a machine designed for making copies from books, so maybe it can be done without causing any damage.

I certainly have no problems in scanning in the wedding photos and uploading them to some spare webspace.

My copy says 2nd Edition. Printed late May 1988. Print run 1500 copies.

I have a copy from the 2nd reprint. It states "Printed September 1988. Print run 2000."

It's no wonder few have come across it considering the runs were so limited.

The picture mentioned above is of Ian and Kelvin Briggs, the Best Man at his wedding.
