New orders Unknown Pleasures

So... turned on NOs old tecnique era mac today for the first time in years to transcribe all the various files & folder details onto my pc.i haven't found a mac or mac printer that can read the files if i save to disc... strange.

it has lyrics, setlists, sequencing software & even some nice notes to each other, "bernards range & patches" (includes electronic tracks gangster & Try All you want for some reason... either kept using same equipment or were considering using them for new order, who knows?) & motivational notes "ok lads, THIS IS IT! etc etc) I guess for the most part its fairly trainspottery (aj seems to be the highest scoring Tetris player, who (s)he!?) But it is interesting to see the rough descriptions for the technique tracks. Run was called VU one (Velvet Underground i'm guessing) as opposed to JD one (john denver that is...)

The most interesting one is The Housey one (vanishing point is called new housey one) a tenth track from technique sessions (it says the file was created Thu, Aug 4, 1988, 5:28 pm) anyone heard anything about this before (other than from me asking about it 2 years ago on anothre website!) or even heard the song. i was trying to work out if maybe they re-used the tune with new lyrics... would it fit any newer tunes?

won it from bbc radio 1 competition. quite unbelievable at the time. as yr interested... its a MAC SE 1 mb RAM, 800k drive, 20SC Hard disk. model no. M5011. whatever all that means. to think it was once probably the best money could buy. i have no idea why a disk formatted on it is unreadable on any other MAC. any thoughts?

they didnt include any authenticity with the computer, it just arrived in a cardboard box from gainwest with some NMEs. one of the nmes was scribbled on with various ideas for the 1963 re-release cover, plastic letters etc possibly gun & trevor keys phone number. oh trivia. so i wrote to them asking for some proof to go with it. they sent back a birthday card, signed by them all with bernard saying "Keep computing". nice.

on a techie note, the 2 synth progs on it won't work without the floppy disks inserted, which i obviously dont have.Master Tracks Pro 3.4 & UpBeat 2.01. any clues anyone?

oh yeah. i think its the same one that made a TOTP appearance with Steve for fine time.

Absolutely magic mate!!! These are the little gems I love coming here for. Miracle it's still working after 14+ years, but those things were built like tanks back in the day.

You should be able to get copies of Master Tracks Pro and UpBeat 2.01 off the net. Try writing to the band again ! Tell you what you could do - if there are complete tracks on there, send copies to the band and request hat they start playing them again !!

Jonny - can you make details of the contents of this machine available please ? There's nothing to be gained by concealing them - obviously only you actually has the stuff, but knowing the contents of the hard drive could unlock a number of mysteries that have driven so many of us round the twist for many years.

who has the emulator? that would be really cool. you could like make noises with it & stuff! i guess mine's the 80s equivalent to having a box of notes.

in answer to the run lyric thing the mac says....

also i wasn't sure before but Regret says "its the school EXAM, the kids have run away" you probably all did though...

also dream attack...VERY minor alteration but the xtra "no life" bit obviously didnt quite fit

dear benny! there actually isnt that much else on there from what i originally described & i didnt transcribe everything across... all the technique lyrics & setlist are as we already know, the track names are as follows (they must have re-checked them all for '93 gigs or summit) i like the way fine time is done though... na nananana (hey hey, goodbye)

That was my first thought, but not from way back then ! Unless it was a song that they had written but didn't know how to record - it happens sometimes. Bob Mould's last album contained a song that he had written in 1986 but had never recorded until last year.

the only other unusual thing i have (not counting my hacienda bricks & dance floor of course) is a flexi disc that i got from brighton with a temptation7" years ago.

its a test pressing by martin hannett called "the first aspect of the same thing" and the 2nd track called something clever like "the same aspect of the first thing" or something. its very dull & beeps & clicks its way along not going anywhere but made slightly more interesting given MHs profile in 24hpp. well played gollum!

basically i'm still trying to find test or demo tracks by the band themselves, surely someone out there has some sort of holy grail song out there??

That flexi was essentially Hannett and Vini Reilly mucking about, and was given away with initial copies of The Return Of The Durutti Column LP.

like i said, only one setlist as written out above & apart from specifics mentioned, all the other lyrics are exactly as we all know & love them, i'll work on pics of the mac next week (it's back in my cupboard again now, dont want to wear it out) can't take proper screen grabs from it but will film/photo the screen with various documents on it & post em to you spotnick.

yeah, the 80s mac desktop would make an amusing pic but even if i can do a screen grab there's no way to transfer the file to another newer mac, let alone my pc! i'll do a good pic of it soon though.

the only other interesting word document worth posting is this one, i think steven used this mac mainly (on the document bernards range & patches (synth patches i guess) it says "my drums"...actually thinking about it it might be the same mac he played dont do it on that rapido feature, have to check my old tapes...) nothing revelatory but kind of shows how they work... possibly having problems with lyrics at that time?

Attention all you MAC heades out there. When I saw nine inch nails in 1990 in a tiny club in Boston Trent had MACS all over the stage. Come to think of it so did ADAMSKI!

MasterTracks Pro was pretty popular for a while. UpBeat is fairly obscure, it's a sequencer for drum rhythms from Intelligent Music, who later went out of business. NO thank Intelligent Music in the liner notes on Technique. Some of IM's stuff was picked up by Dr. T for the Atari, and their algorithmic composition program M is currently available from Cycling74.com if you want to see the kind of stuff they did.

I don't think that upbeat.ch site is the same thing. They just have current software.

Trent wrote PHM on an SE using an Emax, btw.
