What's a good song for a virgin?

Someone who's never heard of JD/NO, that is. Just wondering, seeing as we were sharing our pain about not being able to reach the converted.

Joy Division: My absolute favorite is SLC, but for a newbie I'd start off with something faster paced (like Transmission or Interzone) and segue into a quieter mood (Atmosphere, Decades, etc.)

New Order: Chances are they've heard the biggies sometime during their life, so something maybe not as well known in outside circles (Temptation 87, Ceremony, Your Silent Face, etc) would advisable. Maybe something a little more recent (Young Offender or Fine Time) just in case they think NO are strictly an "80s" band

The first JD song I heard was New Dawn Fades, I still remember the shivers I got when I heard it, I knew the world had changed forever. I was 13 or 14 at the time and it blew me away! Personally I would have a JD virgin listen to Unknown Pleasures, if you're gonna introduce them to JD you may as well do it right, you'll know before Disorder finishes if they've got it or not. With NO it would be PC&L. Same thing, before Age Of Consent finishes you'll know!

I forgot to add Digital to that list, but yeh, maybe give them a listen to Unknown Pleasures or PCL. Those are the two best for a newbie.

Christ Tab Smoker if you play them 'Young Offender' they'll wonder whether New Order were primarily the creators of Dallas and Dynasty background musak.

Play either JD's 'Transmission' or New Order's 'Leave Me Alone' to your virgin friends. If they can't stomach the beating heart of the Order with these two passionate throbbing masters then your friends can simply fuck themselves right off the edge of a fucking great big bastard mountain.

(mind, you could start them with 'Slow Jam' if you wanted rid of them)

JD songs have deffo gotta be Love Will Tear Us Apart (probably the 2nd greatest song ever written after Anarchy in the UK) or 24 Hours NO either Regret, Crystal (one of the best NO songs i've heard live), Thieves Like Us or Ceremony

The first New Order songs I listened to were the ones on (the best of). The ones I first fell for (Shellshock, World) are not the ones I like the best now. In fact, I didn't like any of the tracks from Technique, altho, now Technique is my favourite New Order record. So I don't quite know what to recommend. I made a compilation tape for my friend who's only heard a couple of NO songs, and I included my fave songs from each album. And she really loved the tape! So I think, try with some of your own favourites, and maybe some of the "classics" (ie - True faith, Blue Monday), and if they don't like New Order then, it's just not worth the time trying to convince 'em!

ive never really tried to convert anyone to the cause, the only ppl i ever play jd/no for are my little sisters, and thats more a case of playing it for myself while my sisters are around..i live at with my parents u see :( my 16 year old sister is a manics fan, god help her, so she was a bit curious about jd, considering richie manics ian curtis fixation. anyway i was helping her decorate her bedroom, actually i did 3 walls in the time it took her to do 1, and after she made me listen to the recent manics effort, she was curious to hear the jd tracks that are supposed to sound like manics songs. so anyway i got out my heart and soul box set, and played both cd 1 and 2 twice and fucking loud. there were a few tracks that i could tell she really liked; lwtua, transmission,insight, shes lost control. she likes to play at being blase so i dont know what she made of the rest of it, but she was very enthusiastic when she saw them doing transmission on totp2. apart from this, i once made a jd tape for an indie kid mate, but i never got any feedback from her so im assuming she wasnt keen. i think the slower, more ponderous tracks might have put her off. i definitely think the starting point with jd has got to be the singles and b-sides, how could anyone fail to like them? as for new order, i had to share a room with my 14 year old sister for a couple of months this summer(can u believe it? im fucking 23). the girls got attrocious musical taste, christina aguilera, mariah carey, samantha mumba, all that awful diva pop;its quite strange that she enjoys this stuff cos she is actually musically very gifted herself. so anyway when i was playing substance it wasnt with any intention of introducing her to someting new and frankly, better,she just wouldnt fuck off. but much to my surprise she actually liked some of it, namely the stuff that she could do her demented robotic dancing to; blue monday, perfect kiss,and shellshock. i think with new order youve really got to tailor your choice of introductory tracks to the taste of the intended listener; apart from temptation my sister didnt take too kindly to the guitar based or "weird"(egg apparently) tracks. i think theres got to be one golden rule though, avoid in a lonely place at all costs, itll only scare the ickle virgin.

NO - Leave Me Alone/True Faith/Dream Attack JD - New Dawn Fades/24 Hours/LWTUA

The reason I ask is because I have two siblings, a 14 year old sis and 11 year old bro. My brother is into Backstreet Boys and the like (though I think he buys into the BSB-Nsync "rivalry", so none of that), so I doubt any JD would appeal to him, but I do plan on playing Blue Monday for him some time, just to see if he digs it. My sis seems to enjoy some of their stuff (she always refers to LWTUA as the "Again!" song...you know, "Love will tear us apart, again"), though I am dismayed that she didn't like Crystal when I played it for her. I also wonder how any potential mate would react to my love for those gloomy Mancunians, but that's another matter entirely....

I had an intesting experience a few days ago. A 22 years old girl heard "Temptation" and thought it was specially recorded for Trainspotting.

She really loved Elegia, too.

And, you have to put "Blue Monday" because, most of the time, you will have a "I know this, it's great. It's New Order ?" reaction.
