which genre(s) do you consider New Order's music to fall under? for me - and probably for most people here - New Order is a completely unique band with their own, indefinable sound, but let's be geeks and discuss what kind of music theirs is. do you think of it as synth pop? electro pop? new wave? rock? something else entirely?
i just thought it might make for an interesting discussion.
Agreed, they're 'indefinable'.
I don't like to pigeon-hole anything, and the only band I'd consider making comparisons with are the Smiths. But that's cos I grew up as a teenager in the mid-80's where both bands were omnipresent, and had similar fanatical followings.
There's a myriad of bands I personally 'associate' with New Order - the likes of ACR, the Mondays, etc - but musically they're obviously poles apart.
It still never ceases to amaze me how some people lump the Order in with the likes of Depeche Mode, the Cure, etc. Still, each to their own. I don't see it though.

i agree - all three bands sounds completely unique, and they can't really be lumped together at all. in terms of subcultural significance they can, but certainly not musically. they're very different.
i honestly can't think of any bands that i think sound a lot like New Order. they're so unique and i just don't think their sound can be replicated. their use of synths and guitars (both bass and lead) are really, really unique.

Why are people so concerned with sticking labels on everything. I tend to buy stuff I like - not stick to genres defined by some marketing department in the US.

yes...i definitely agree with the sentiment that all the pigeonholing is bullshit. i just find genres fascinating. and it's interesting to see people's interpretations!

and that's interesting...the idea of pigeonholing being more American. i suppose that i have noticed this...it's strange.
the amazing thing about NO is that every song is different. Look especially at their compilations (best of, etc.). Actually most songs don't fit together.
Their sound is unique; personal; vulnerable; addicting and so on. Because they don't "fit", they'll never be superstars. Of course with exception of this small place on the web :)
Hey, it's just me interpretation (excuse my spelling by the way) of their music. I do think it's absolutely unnessecary to categorise them. But that is the topic of this thread. They are New Order, nothing more, nothing less, and fittingly so.
Call it what you will but, to put it simply...
"Its everything I ever wanted from music - and then some."

I agree with all that's been said....New Order just fits with me somehow.
If I'm feeling in a very gay disco mood, it's PSB. If I'm feeling a very angst-y mood, it's Linkin Park. If I'm feeling a very chill/indie mood, it's Pinback or Interpol. If I'm in a very down mood, it's Joy Division.
Any combination of those and then some, it is and will forever be New Order. So to describe it's genre:
