I was always desperate for them all to go in. after the initial good form of 83 (Blue Monday & Confusion) I mouthed off to all and sundry that Thieves would go in Top 3 no problem (it as you know surfaced at a very disappointing 21). My wife always claimed I looked like someone in the family had just died when The Perfect Kiss, Sub-Culture & BLT all failed to dent the Top 40. So, I'll always treasure that sunny July Tuesday morning when The Beebs Simon Mayo announced that this, True Faith, is the heighest new entry at 19. you'd thought I'd won the (Irish) Lotto! Think it took me until Ruined In A Day to start acting me age over the Sunday Roast (the chart rundown had as you all know had shifted slots by 93). Still! all part and parcel of wearing the anorak I spose. anyone else use to suffer the same gut wrenching feeling just as numbers 40 to 2 were being relayed?

I spent the whole of Xmas 86 banging on about how BLT would DEFO be top 5 for New Order in John Peel's Festive 50, especially after their successes in previous years.
It didn't even make the top 50. Nothing by New Order did.
I heard BLT on (I think) late night Radio 2 ... possibly Janice Long. I heard it and I thought, that is fucking amazing. Then she said it was New Order, who I was just getting into after Sub-Culture 12". That's got to me top 10 - as Al says, not a dent.
Then True Faith went to no. 4 and then I started thinking, actually I quite liked the fact they were exclusive.
You can't please everyone!
Glad to hear mention of Peeley's Chrimbo Top 50 ... That year Al, wasn't it a Smiths song? - I seemed to remember stuff by Duritti Column, Fledgling Circus by James (not the famous James band) - cracking year for music anyway. I think my memories going.

But then again what with all the trouble they went to do the "miami beach satellite link up" i expect bbc bosses demanded it bloody well HAD to!!!
Crystal also sneaked in the top 10 at number 8 as well i think.

I've always had mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I was always proud of NewOrder's popularity, on the other I didn't want to share my favorite band with Mr. Average Joe. So imagine my feelings when Substance went Top Ten here in Portugal at the tail end of 1987... as an Import! Actually, it was rather funny to see the presenter of our version of Top of the Pops saying, week afer week, "Sorry, but we have no video for this release...". Of course not! NewOrder had no record contract here!

Good link - Jesus Christ how many Smiths entries. All top quality mind. Age of Chance, I bought some of their gear - didn't they wear Tour De France T-shirts?

actually, it wasn't Peel's choice was it - they were public votes. I should have voted. The shame of it.
Still they were top of the pile in 1983 :D
Also i just noticed Leave Me Alone at 25 and Age Of Consent at 3 and Your Silent Face at 18 and The Village at 45 during the same year 
- the despair under the xmas tree lights as Fine-Time fell one short of the 88 xmas top 10. + I put me mortgage on Blue Monday 88 climbing 2 from 3 to the number 1 spot. it fell 2 i think. gutted. the higher they went, the better. + it meant TOTP became more of an event as they were bar one appearance from New Model Army, the only band who felt it right to perform "Live" regardless of the damaging effect this seem to have on the folowing week's sales. see, as Hooky once claimed, they were the new Sex Pistols after all!

Er, you're wrong there sir - in Peely's 1989's Festive 50, "Vanishing Point" off Technique (yeah - an album track!) actually made it to number 27 in the run down...

I didn't really want to share the band with the PUBLIC because the MYTH and NO PROMO stories are better.So i was amazed that ANY of the records actually charted because i had always thought you had to be CHOOSEN to REALLY love the band and discover just how BRILLIANT they are.Mind you i always was a MAD BASTARD so what do i know?
