Just wondering whether there are any good urban myths doing the rounds about NO/JD (aside from the Love-Vigilantes-hidden-track-on-Retro gag, of course  ) ?

Eg, is it true that Everything's Gone Green is so called because the band worked on the song all night and came out from the studio in the morning and... ?

That they're playing Reading, Leeds and Warrington in August? :eek3:

I read in a fanzine that "Every Little Counts" was written by Bernard with Paul Daniels (British Magician....kinda like David Blaine) in mind. In August 1986 his missus was quoted in The Sun saying, "This band called New Order phoned up our agent, and asked if Paul would be in the video, it was supposed to be Ironic, as Paul is currently hosting the TV programme with the same name"

I kid you not!

"Closer" has been recorded under a plaster vault to get a resonance similar to a chapel. I've read about this only in Portuguese (a Portuguese book and a Brazilian magazine). A Portuguese myth perhaps?

There was the story in the Les Bains Douches booklet about JD pissing on Spandau Ballet from a balcony. Also Ian getting excited about finding a huge turd in the bogs at some festival, and the various larks on the Buzzcocks tour. Not quite urban myths, but good stories.

 Aye, and don't forget the story about Ian and Barney pissing on the Buzzcock's drums from the rehearsal studio above in 77.

I like the story in that recent SoulJazz ACR comp, told by Jeremy, I think it was, about a time in the earlier days when ACR and JD shared a rehearsal space. After JD moved out, Jeremy went to the place, only to find it totally dark. Moving cautiously about the room, he crept to his amp, only to find a pigs head on top of it, and fuses for the place inside its mouth.

I always liked the story of how they got Steve Brotherdale to "leave" the band. He was a bit of a big head by all accounts, and had made a few noises about how Warsaw weren't very good and that he was going to join a much better band and take Ian with him.

On the way home from a gig one night they pulled the van over and told him to check the tyres because they thought they had a puncture. As he got out, they just drove off and left him there...

Shortly after Curtis died the lads would rehearse in some practise rooms in Salford and used to pretend that Curtis was locked away in a dark broom cupboard. They used to push people into the cupboard and lock it to scare the shite out of them.

Well the studio in which it was recorded was in a basement of an old building which was certainly a vault - we can only speculate as to whether it had been lined with plaster.

Another good 'un, and probably totally untrue. After Ian died, some promoter or other asked them where the singer was, and soneone (may have been Rob???) said "hanging around in the kitchen".

This one is true ! Unsuspecting (and hopelessly out-of-touch) music promoter asked them in late 1980 where the singer was, hence Rob's ascerbic reply.

Whaddya mean? This is legit:nod:

I have the article cutting in front of me, from Paradise Issue 3, it has the cutting from the Sun newspaper inside it......here's exactly what the wee article states :

TV Magician turns down Video Offer Every Little Counts host and popular magician Paul Daniels has turned down the offer to appear in a new video by Manchester band New Order. His wife Debbie McGee said "New Order's management got in touch with Pauls agent, and requested excerpts of the programme to be placed in their video for the song "Every Little Counts" but the BBC refused because of legal reasons" New Order have shelved plans to release the single, and are planning a tour of America in July.

The reason I ever started to listen to Joy Division was as follows. A guy in the music shop told me: LOOK, you like the Doors? Here's an album where one of the Doors' men plays on, check it! Well I bought that LP (it was Closer) and wondered for a long time who the heck from the Doors was exactly on that LP. Crap. So glad no one of those hippies played a note on JD/NO magnificent tracks.
