Critical Technique

What kind of response did Technique get in the music press ( NME, Melody Maker, Sounds etc.) at the time of it's release back in 1989 ? I'd yet to discover the music weeklies back then and I've always been curious as to how my favourite album fared.

V. well - Melody Maker had extensive review which seemed to understand the Ibiza vibe, and thus the content of the album; and what New Order were saying.

Burt Lancaster rolling around the beach with broad was the accompanying image (I think), although that could have been in the NME. Either way it looked a bit like Bernard which is why they included perhaps.

More intriguing was Steve Morris's appearance in a free music magazine, a big (4, 5, 6 pager) in which he relates the story of how the drumming was recorded! - possibly called 'Music Maker' (the mag). He had a T-shirt on which looked like a bullet hitting glass!

Was good. Was good because it described how they produced the album. I've got the mag. (in my loft).

I don't know. someone told me that NME made a New Order rewiew a few weeks ago, giving 5 stars to Technique. But i don't know how were the critics then.

afair it was v well received, generally perceived as first time they had made an album proper

I remember Melody Maker's review had a track-by-track commentary. 5 stars was the note given, I seem to recall...

If I remember right, they recorded it much the same way as Happy Mondays did Yes Please, except less work got done.

This image was doing the rounds as a poster for the album at the same time as the Cherub with bronze border I recall - used to show up weekly at "Poster Fairs" in Sheffield 89/90...

incidentally, isn't the image similar in composition to the Beach campaign used for Republic...?
