Song titles, movie titles, film references

I've noticed that some Joy Division/New Order song names are taken from the titles of movies (or at least, they seem to be). I can think of at least three songs... eg. - Cries and Whispers (Bergman), Thieves Like Us (Robert Altman), In a lonely place (by Ray, a film-noir with Bogart) Some other songs have obvious references - Ultra-violence is a phrase used in "A Clockwork Orange", and in Murder they have samples from "Caligula" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" Anyone else who knows if there are any other influences/references to films in N.O. songs?

Didn't know Murder had samples from Caligula....That's a messed-up movie, I've only made it 30 minutes into that. It looks dirty and grimy, like someone put the film in salt water before putting the reel on.

I read somewhere that the samples "Crows, crows, crows, I HATE THEM" and "Crawl across" are taken from that movie. Haven't seen it though. It's seems to be a bit pornographic from what I've read...

"Caligula" was originally intended as a 'serious' arthouse-type movie, but then the bloke that owns Playboy took over and turned it into a soft-pron romp. It's a pile of shit.

cool title for a song...i don't see how it relates to the lyrics though...

Yea, many of their lyrics seems spiritual, actually. Just think of titles Tbthog or True Faith!

Actually, I remember Cash for questions in "Q" where someone asked if Tbthog was about "whacking off" and he claimed that he he never ever had masturbated or written a song about it.. What does "playing with my pleasure zone mean", then? Is Barney a liar? sometimes I believe he makes up things, just for fun...

The film that has Keifer Sutherland is called "the Vanishing" Not Vanishing Point. Vanishing Point was a Movie Released in 1971 It was a exellent Car chase movie with some Black Blind DJ and what else.. Pills.

That's right. And the original film was dutch, not french or swiss.

Associations :-) : btw. when listening to "Denial" from "Movement" I see some scenes from another favourite of mine, the excellent "Repulsion" from 1965.

An old, wise gentleman once told me in confidence that Joy Division's 'Atrocity Exhibition' was based on a very rare Geri Hallibake concert from '97.

That same man also told me he could levitate. The latter was accpeted after I witnessed him picking the cherries from trees without the aid of a stepping ladder.

Vanishing point also includes the line "And they gave him away, like in Whistle down the Wind" Classic British 60s film starring Hayley Mills about some kids who find an escaped convict in their barn and think he`s Jesus

i often wondered about that reference...the only time i heard whistle down the wind is from a nik heyward song with the same title...

so does the movie involve the kids turning the convict over to the police or something?

Think so. Cant remember its ages since I`ve seen it

New Order contributed the track "Theme" to a Crepescule collection inspired by the cinema called "The Quick Neat Job". Also on that album is a New Order produced track by Paul Haig called "The Only Truth", with guitar by Barney.

On another note, the dialogue used on "Don't Do It" came from a one-off BBC drama. Can't for the life of me remember what it was called, but it involved some people on a narrow boat holiday. They started killing each other and it all got a bit surreal.
