Why not "Guilty Partner" on the setlist ???

Just got a recording from the Alexandra Palace-Gig in 98 where they performed "Guilty Partner" live. And now i'm wondering why they didn't keep it for the "Get Ready"-Tour. Sounds quite nice and fits very well into the GetReady-sound i think...maybe directly after Love Vigilantes :D

Because they don´t know how to play it live perfectly as well.

It sort of fell over when they played it live in 1998, so I guess that, like Special, which bombed equally badly when attempted in 1993, that it should be consigned to that great back catalogue in the sky.

Can you expand on that? Special was always my most treasured tune off of Republic and I would have killed to hear it live. What exactly happened? Did it just not come across well? The same can be said of Everyone Everywhere, another tune off the album that I loved on the release, but that sounded like horse manure live.

Sure I can expand on it. It sounded shit !! Barney got the words wrong despite the autocue, Hooky screwed up the bass, the synth sounded tinny and weak, and the whole song contained none of its recorded power. It was quite embarrassing, and they obviously realised this as they dropped it immediately.

As usual Tim dont beat around the bush when it comes to giving opinions on NewOrder songs ;) but with his vast knowledge on live recordings and gigs he can well afford to be

I happen to love Special as well Stephen, but he's right, i have a bootleg of that show with Special performed and it does not do the song any justice whatsoever, so your not missing anything!! its one of those songs that stays best in its truest form - as a studio recording :) And Barney fucking up the words to one of the most poignant songs he's penned is also a virtually unforgivable sin!!!

That is Roskilde '93 if I'm right, isn't it?

YES! The only time it's been played live so far.

Thanks for the info and heads up. One of the amazing things on this board is the incredible breadth of knowledge of their live sets, and bootlegs. I've come across all of about 4 bootlegs in my life over here in the bay area. Of course I stopped buying them back in '96 or thereabouts, but the only things I managed to track down were the Pumped Full of Drugs, Japan record, a double record from a late '83 gig that included early versions of Thieves and Sooner than you think, and a CD version of the Reading '93 gig. Other than that Ive never been able to track down any of the bootlegs, and I stopped looking years and years ago when it looked like the band had broken up and new and other bands had captured my interest and my dollars instead.

One of the real bummers for me is not having access to live versions of my favorite new order tunes, stuff like Special, 1963, Weirdo, Thieves, Mr. Disco, Run, Vanishing Point, Loveless, and other tunes that may have been played live, but were never on any bootlegs I saw (w/the exception of thieves which was on a putrid recording), so it's nice to hear from you guys how the stuff actually went and what was actually played live.

Was Barney using an autocue in 93? Confess, I can't remember.

I think the reason Special bombed at Roskilde so badly was because of the drums. I just remember they were way high in the mix and the melody's so frail that it was completely drowned out.. .

thanks, nic.:thumb:

it's not their best. it sounds like they haven't rehearsed this song at all with keyboard lines, basslines and vocals comming in at the wrong places and bad sound mixing. and the drums are too loud. i think if they rehearsed it better, it would be a good live song.

Thanks, been aching to hear what went so wrong with this song live...

I agree Snuck, what the hell was Stephen thinking? Maybe the minimalist RIAD-style drumming would've saved this, there is (was) a great live song somewhere in there....

well...it would sound better if the Barnster would be a bit more secure with the song arrangement. sounds a bit more like a hit and miss-thing. "when should i start to sing and where"...

None of the Technique songs really worked live. Thieves Like Us changed considerably over the years, from being a 15 minute extravaganza in the early days to a stripped-down 4 min version towards the end. Some of the pre-release US 83 versions were amazing. 1963 isn't really a live song, the drums always sounded too loud. Weirdo sounds as much of a mess live as it did on record. Quite a few false starts over the years !!

I was at that concert at the MEN, fuckin funny as fuck that was, Gillian was never the strongest geetar player, and she really did not know how to play it - mind you the rest of the band were just as much to blame:nod:

I disagree with you again Timbo, loadsa the songs off Technique worked well live (Round & Round, Vanishing Point, All The Way, Mr Disco, Dream Attack) they were magic on the 89 tour. Fine Time, I'd probably agree with you - that song would have more suited a rave in a dodgy looking warehouse in the country:D I have a few live vids from this era as well - and ok, the sound isnae the best, but actually being at the concert, the sound was great......just a pity a lot of bootleg recordings don't do the band justice.

In the words of Ralph Wiggum "I'm Special"

I think the fact that New Order screws up perfectly good album songs into incoherant disasters live more often than most bands sort of makes them a better group somehow...that's just my 2 cents, don't spend it all in one place.

They sounded shite ! Hooky screwed up nearly every bassline every time they played them, the songs sounded disjointed live whether you were there, watching a vid or listening to a bootleg. You can't seriously tell me that Big World Cafe was a vintage performance ? Fine Time was about the only one that sounded like they intended it to. Round and Round wasn't too bad, primarily because it is nearly all sequencer. There was something about the live setup in 1989 that didn't work, maybe new technology.

i caught them once on the technique tour..and that was enough...b-ham nec...the crowd had changed, the venues were shat and whilst technique is/was a superb album...they did struggle with it live..

You's two are just OLD:D

Big World Cafe was magic, or am I alone in thinking that? As I say when people ask about bootlegs, Reading 89 was a cracking concert, as was the NEC 89.

I for one would love to see some of the Technique songs again, even if it did mean knocking the JD one's intae touch.

Your not wrong BWC is a stunning performance :D Technique is widely regarded as their finest album! so what if they screwed up some of the songs, the essence of the songs they played was majestical and i for one am glad they did play them for us to hear than scrap them after one airing - else we'd all be moaning about how come there arent more live versions of Technique material ;)

Thank god im not old enough to have been to all the gigs in the 80's or i'd be looking to draw my pension and go on SAGA holidays soon.. ;)

But besides that, im confident in saying its a stunning performance from having seen it and heard it on many occasions and still enjoying it each time i view it! - the fact i enjoy it leans towards the assumption that i think its rather good!!
