I don't know....I'd imagine, for all their fans worldwide, REM probably have a more solid base of support here in the US. In other words, the rest of the world might be a little more fickle in regards to REM, but the American fans they have now will be willing to grow with them, no matter what horrific twists or turns they take.

New Order, based on my perspective from here in the heartland, are probably bigger up north in New York/Chicago, etc. Overall, though, they're bigger in britain and other parts.

i have a feeling that what tim burgess was trying to get at at was that michael stipe is a better live frontman than barney. i definitely remember him saying someting about stipes "presence" and that he could be enigmatic but still command the attention of the room...he also said something about stipes lyrics being elusive but still working i really can`t remember too specifically but he did say quite a lot on the subject. it stuck in my mind cos he sounded like quite the disgrintled new order fan

I agree that Barney is probably the worst of the lot when it comes to live performance (Hooky, Steve and Gillian all seem really tight, but he fscks up a bit) but he's written some amazing lyrics. The Brotherhood albumn has some fantastic lyrics. Same as PCL...

I always found Barney far more compelling to watch when he was out of it or looking like he couldn't give a toss - see for example the NO live appearance on BBC's Rock Around the Clock broadcast in the mid-8os for example - there was more of a sense of not knowing what he was going to do next which I personally find more endearing than when he's actually sober, lively and trying to entertain - but hey, I think it would be a bit selfish of me to demand that he goes back to the spaced-out days just for my enjoyment

I remember that one too Ken!! Summer 1984! That was when New Order unveiled for the first time a new song from Low-Life: "Sooner Than You Think" (working title: "We Love You"). Barney was a stroppy little fucker throughout, wasn't he? Kept shouting at Stephen off-mike to speed up his drumming during "In A Lonely Place". He even let slip the "F-word" during "Blue Monday"...... "tell me what the FUCK I should do...." What a naughty boy!! Anyone got a good quality radio recording (FM) of that session? Mine was on cruddy old MW and it sounded cack!!

Which makes the lyrics rather sad once you know that...

I like the one where it says 'if jesus comes to take your hand i won't let go' i think that's quite moving, though i do admit that the song sounds a bit sad.

Sooner Than You Think appeared on quite a few nights during the summer of 84, having first reared its then ugly head at Brixton Academy at the end of 83. Probably the definitive version is Gloucester Leisure Centre 84, where it sounded awesome. The lyrics that night suggested that it wasn't just Berlin that Barney had had a problem with earlier that year !

The BBC version was a good 'un, remember it well as I was listening to it on the radio stuck in a traffic jam outside Portsmouth FCs ground, trying desperately to get to the Guildhall to pick up a ticket for the next night's show ! Bastards with their cross-country tour...... :)
