SHOCK HORROR!! DECLARE ALL OUT WAR ON MEDIOCRITY!!
Some mortifying news just in. Whilst surfing elsewhere, it has come to my attention that those gormless purveyors of flavourless disposable pap STEPS are to continue bombarding us with with their cover version hell by planning the release of New Order's seminal classic "BLUE MONDAY" as a single in January. The shocking news really isn't that surprising when you consider that Pete Waterman is their svengali and as we all know PW is a huge Eurodisco fan - not for nothing did he create a whole fucking production line of interchangeable hits for all his protegees during his 1980s heyday with songs that all - in one way or another - had basslines very similar to "Blue Monday". Fuckin' hell. I'd rather Osama Bin Laden crap anthrax on my head than await the prospect of this terrifying act of sabotage waiting to be unleashed. I can just hear that fucking hi-hat sound now..... BASTARDS!! BASTARDS!! FUCK!! FUCK!! SICK SICK BASTARDS!!!!
Everybody!!! A STATE OF EMERGENCY HAS NOW BEEN OFFICIALLY DECLARED!!!!
STEPS TO COVER NO'S "BLUE MONDAY"!!!

Steps, eh? Never heard of 'em.....
I freaked out when Orgy did their *awful* take on BM, but the nation healed, order (new) was restored, and Orgy are now the house band at some Holiday Inn where it's karaoke night every Friday. Keep breathing, it will pass..........
thats fucking hilarious! please let it be true! i hate steps and it will be a totally godawful version if it actually happens, but can u imagine just how funny itll be? H trying to sound menacing and them all dressing up as robots or something. and the dance routine? its worth it just to see what utterly crap moves their coreographer will come up with.
Steps are just the latest in along line a trendy teeny twat-wank pappy dick-wet shite that us Britons have to put up with having rammed down our throats every bloody day we are alive. Think of Rick Astley, Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Boyzone, Backstreet Boys, Aqua, or your own Tiffany and New Kids on The Block - yup, THAT bad. And this motley bunch just rely on crappy cover versions for their hits: so far their tally of shame has included covers of Bee Gees songs "Tragedy" (yes, apt isn't it?) and "Chain Reaction" (Diana Ross scored with that back in '86). Count yourself lucky that you didn't even have to suffer the godawful SPICE GIRLS when they were unstoppable.......

Actually I'm getting together a punk/goth/rap/pop group called Libarace's Rotting Corpse, and we're probsbly going to do a cover of Blue Monday (seems to be mandatory these days). Look for us at your local Quality Inn bar!
"liberaces rotting corpse".. thats almost as good as my mate`s band "ollie reed dies in pub"
Still, not as good as "Cat Chews Off Geriatric's Right Bollock" (courtesy of Viz comic Sept 1987)

How about Debbie Gibson's Two-headed Love Child (I think that's how it went)?
Hmm, more band names: Radioactive Afghan Wigs Single Cell Orgasms Blue Balls and Bat and my favorite: The Blessed, Intelligent, Talented, Charming, Handsome Band (In short, the BITCH Band)
But come on, let's get with the programme: there surely can't be a worse name for a band than STEPS? Just look at that word.....STEPS...... Steps. Steps. Steps. STEPS!! That is just the ultimate in mundanity isn't it? Steps. What the fuck? Steps. CACK!!! Bet that took years of brain-racking to come up with something so unbelievably meaningful as that. It's so nondescript you can't even think of a witty riposte for it. By the way, the anagram PESTS isn't much better either. Cack name!! Cack band!! Cack record!!

I for one can't wait!!
Frode, my good chum, a Siouxsie fan!! Just what we need in these times of high anxiety and uncertainty. Go straight to the topic "Well, The Cure it is then!" and check out my references to the mighty queen of punk!! Pronto!!

Talking of crap cover versions didn't Samantha Fox do Sub-culture for one of her B sides. I seem to remember Grace Jones doing something as well but this may have been a JD song...She's Lost Control perhaps?

Samantha Fox? SubCulture?? Fuck, you are kidding?? Can you imagine the girls in Spoons (sic) seizing their final moment of glory and exposing and shaking THEIR cleavage from side to side in time to the stuttering drum beat intro? Fucking hell. Come back Kelly Marie....all is forgiven!!!
******NEWSFLASH******
Just heard on the radio that Kylie is recording a new version of 'Sputnik' for release in Feb. 2002, and Posh Spice is hot on her tail with her own cover version of Decades by Joy Division.

Oh .....my....god!!! Really?? I've got to hear that one!!!!. Something of the sado-masochist lurking within me is urging me to check this one out.....
Apparently there may be hope yet..... news just in through the grapevine - well actually a week old - is that there is talk of two members of Steps quitting the band to - erm - get more intimate with each other -, so the likelihood is, if two of them decide to walk, it just wouldn't be Spoons anymore, would it?..... excuse me a mo......
(pause for a moment to gather my composure: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!! HURRY HURRY HURRY!!!! GET IT OVER AND DONE WITH!!!!! BYE BYE!!! SEE YA!!!! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!)
.......phew, that's better!......so that possibly means that they will be releasing a Greatest Hits album for Christmas, and....best of all.... if they do split after this...we may be spared the horrible prospect of FACkin horrible 73.....
But then again....what's the bet that YOU lot are simply gaggin' to cop an earful of it , huh? Go on admit it, you're just dying to hear it aren't you?

Just for the record - albeit belatedly - has anyone properly heard a version of JD's Love Will Tear Us Apart as performed by The Swans? Sometime in the mid-late eighties....? Anyone at all? Was it any good? I ask because I got into some late-period (early 1990's) Swans LPs after they developed from their earlier sheer-noise terror incarnation to the more melodic Goth sounding stuff of albums like "Love Of Life" and "White Light In The Heat Of Infifnty" (both classics) .
Whilst also on NO covers: does anybody recall The Oyster Band's cover of "Love Vigilantes" in 1989?? Andy Kershaw rated this bunch immensely: they were on Cooking Vinyl Records. I only heard a live version of this on a session they did for Mr. K. but that was it. I wasn't too keen on it however....any other people's thoughts on this one??
Don't Steps or any other band for that matter need permission from NO to cover one of their songs or is it up to the record label?
If they do need permission from NO why did they allow Steps to do it?

Yes, the Swans version of LWTUA is good, though it was hated by some of their fans who wanted them to repeat the blustery sounds of their first records. It came out in `88. Mid-tempo compared to the original, it fits in quite nicely with the body of work that the Swans did back then.

Not if Brittney Spears´ cover of Atmosphere is released first.

I think it was quite good, actually. The Oysters were panned by certain critics and many fans because a proper "celtic" band should not be covering New Order, though.
