Hey folks -

Was just poking around Apple Computer's new online music service...the deal where you download single tracks for $0.99. Anyhoo, in the first week of business, New Order come in at No. 54 on the Alternative chart with their hit single...

Nah, guess whydon'tcha. I'll go have another Beck's.

I'm addicted to the new Apple music store! Although you can't find any indie label stuff or rarities, It's perfect when you just want that one hit song and don't want to buy the whole album.

What's also great about Itunes 4 is the ability to share your playlist across the internet with other Itune users. It's like setting your own radio station. Hey maybe this can be a way to broadcast my NO collection.

And yes, BLT wins a year's supply of Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco treat. If you buy just one New Order track in the United States this year, it's "Bizarre Love Triangle."

What's freaky is that, though I haven't downloaded any songs, it's amazing how many people apparently have the same songs stuck in their heads that I do...Violent Femmes' "American Music," "Blister in the Sun;" They Might Be Giants, Devo...eerie.

These are the new classics.

Just curious but what QUALITY is the music they sell? Is it in WAV format or MP3?

it's excellent. It on the new AAC format. The sound is great, file size is small. you can burn it on unlimted numbers of CD, use the AAC format on up to 3 mac computers. The quality of the service is excellent.

AAC format is that better than a 320kbps mp3 or equvalent to a WAV?

Supposely it's better, it uses the new mpeg 4 technology. the Mp3 replacement I heard.

No, don't go there, go here: http://www.apple.com/mpeg4/aac/

To my ears the quality is great, but it's still a lossy codec, so no, it's not better than WAV or AIFF. However, MP4 audio sounds much better than MP3 at the same bit rate. Still, even 192Kbps encoding would have been nice...

And Michael, be careful with iTunes 4...it seems to install with the "Sound Enhancer" turned on as the default setting. Yuck.
