Albert Hall 86 & "televised" gig? — Forum Archive

Saw Tindersticks at the RAH on Friday, and while the venue suited the 'Sticks gloomy grandeur, it struck me as the least "New Order" venue I've ever been to - for those who were there in '86, what was it like? And did you get ordered round by old blokes in penguin suits?

Also, I remember reading once about a London Order gig that was recorded by the BBC in (I think) 1987 but eventually never shown. Certainly I've got a feature on the band taped off either Snub TV (God bless it!) or Rapido featuring live footage of the band I've never seen before or since. Anyone got any info on this, and has it ever turned up in bootleg form? (The footage actually looked similar to that which features briefly in the "BLT" video.)

The Brixton Academy gig in 1987 was filmed for Channel 4, and arguably their best live recording on VHS. Perfect Kiss was just orgasmic with full on guitar from Barney, also BLT with guitar in its best form me thinks.

I was at the RAH gig in '86. From what I remember it was quite a relaxed but enjoyable affair. We originally had tickets way up in the gods but we managed to get in the orchestra pit (the standing section) without anyone checking our tickets.

Quite a good set list from what I remember 586, Love Vigilantes, Sunrise, Perfect Kiss, Age of Consent plus various Brotherhood goodies.

No, no - it's definitely a different show to that on the "Academy" release: the BBC obviously had a view to showing it in the wake of "True Faith" but it never came to pass. perhaps it wasn't in London - does anyone know the Snub/Rapido feature I'm thinking about??

Had the Snub TV feature on tape for ages but think I went over it with some footy by mistake.

This is the interview where Barney refers to U2s lead singer as Bongo I think, & generally gives him a good slating for trying to be a messiah!. Surely not.

That said, can't recall the live bit you're on about, so not much use to you.

RAH 1986 - what did you call your self in those days Mr D? pre-Technique & all that. Good to put a face to the name last week mate.

The Beeb taped Glasto 87 in full, and I believe Ikon taped Macclesfield 85 in full, but then decided to release the Tokyo gig as PFD instead.

Ah, Allen Jarvis, fountain of all N.O.-related trivia!! I guess it may be the Macclesfield gig you mention, then. I think I've decided it was the Rapido feature, with the band wandering around the Macclesfield hills and Barney in big long neo-goth coat. There is a brief clip of the band playing live (I think the interview goes over the top of the music, though) bathed in then-standard blue light. Have these filmed shows ever surfaced in "illegitimate" form then, Jarvo?

Don't remember the live clip of them from Rapido? Though do remember them wandering around Northern Hills. Also remember that was the first time I'd heard Fine Time though, at the time, didn't realise it was actually Fine Time but just another Acieeed track playing over footage of the Hac. Never seen any of the aforementioned gigs on bootleg, sorry.

To answer on the behalf of Jarvo.. no they haven't. Unfortunately these live snippits remain NO enigmas. The TV show your referring to also showed Hooky spinning inside a 360 degrees muscle builder, right? - and Steve was playing Don't Do It on his Apple Mac, hitting his own mouse button at the snare intro of the song.

The live segments sound really quite excellent don't they?! - as you say, bathed in blue light... marvellous. Considering how many gigs they've done its not surprising that several have been either missed, not taped, lost or forgotten... I'm also sure that amongs these... the real pearls exist.

Jarvo... how 'surprised' where you after seeing that 'Fine Time' clip (obviously unbeknown that it was the Order in the background - but intrigued by the original sound) - to find out that it actually WAS an Order song a couple of weeks later? - I remember feeling close to suicide... then thinking, well, its not bad... then thinking... marvellous.

Didn't pay too much interest to it at the time. Seem to remember they had "Don't Do It" on Rapido too, but didn't for one minute realised it was an Order chooon too. Absolutely GUTTED when I first heard it on Peel, mind. And I was actually a big fan of Acid - I remember the G-Mex 88 gig fell on the same day as one of the big Biology raves and I had mates going to that whilst I went to Mancland. At the time I just thought, "What the fuck are New order doing?".

The programme that you are referring to ran under the working title of New Order Play At Home shown on Channel 4 during August 1984. The three segments of live footage originated from a recent set at The Hacienda. Thieves Like Us, Lonesome Tonight and Temptation were the three songs in question.

Huntsy to the rescue!! Yeah, that's the episode of "Rapido" I was thinking of: places them all in their little pigeonholes - Steve the studio-bound boffin, Hooky the muscle-bound cock-rocker, Barney the wayward dreamer, Gillian the incongrous lass...... Still, I miss Rapido and Snub. Very brave and innovative TV for the time. And I'm glad I haven't imagined the live footage - surely this will surface someday in compete form???? Please!!!!

Well Martin my old fruit you aren't alone. As soon as I saw that live footage I thought 'Wow'... when was that and how the blazes can thy grab a hold of such beauty. Some bits of the show looked like they were filmed as NO themselves were getting ready for a gig on that night? - its mysterious like this that still keep the Order truly original and swamped with contradictions and other worldly things.

Its'a always reassuring to know that something that's bugged you for several years has always bugged someone else. In this instance, its me. Its nice to share things, would you like a banana?

(PS I must have 99% of every and all tv appearances by NO since 1980... I might just dig out some tapes and have a viewing of our little discussion - ahhh, mammories).

Wasn't the Festival of the Tenth Summer performance at GMEX in '86 on the box as well? Never saw it myself, supposed to have been on Sky(???).

A memorable programme this was - not least for the interview by Gillian of Anthony H in the bath - thank god I hadn't just eaten when I watched it
