That mysterious "Osaka 85" gig

Firstly, many many thanks to Robin Bashinsky for sending me a copy of the gig.

The findings of the Cobweb jury are.....

  1. Definitely a Far East 85 gig, no doubt about it. Bass had that mid-85 sound to it (was Hooky using a new pedal ?) - anyone who has a Japan/Aus/NZ 85 bootleg will know what I mean. Also talking in Oriental language in background. I'm no Japanese expert though, which makes me think it could also be Chinese/Cantonese.

  2. Different mistakes are made in songs that do not tally with other known recordings of that era, there is no way that this is a splice job of other gigs.

  3. Barney announces before As It Is When It Was "I've only sung this once before". I know this wasn't true, as he sang it at Macclesfield and Salford a fortnight before this gig.

  4. It appears there was an encore after all, as the band came back on and Barney began to speak just before the CD finished. Slight possibility that Perfect Kiss, the first song on the CD, could have been the encore as somebody in the audience called out "encore" just before it started playing.

  5. Some interesting and novel lyrics on Lonesome Tonight that do not tally with any other live versions.

  6. Though I do believe this is a "hidden gem" recording (and it's of good quality as well :)), I'm still not 100% convinced it is from Osaka - I suspect it may be the Hong Kong gig just before the Tokyo shows. There are two English (Mancunian) voices talking at the end of As It Is, either those who were taping the show or someone in the band's entourage.

  7. Whatever the date is, it's a fantastic find and one that will be played to death on the flight to Antigua next week !!!

Here's an e-mail I received off a bloke who was at the Canton club gig.

Don't know if this'll clear it up, or not?

"Yes I went to this gig. I was a big JD fan and also NO at the start. I happened to be in HK and nearly didn't go to the gig cos I was poor and tickets were the equivalent of,I think, USD$17. Quite a lot at the time. But Eartha Kitt was playing soonafter and it was more than twice that price so we did go in the end realisingthat was the local prices. The club was called The Canton. It was quitetrendy. 98% of the audience were Chinese. Barney comes on and says 'Anyonefrom Manchester?' They were horrible, verging on racist I'd say and hugelycondescending. But I never liked them as people really. They played Low Lifeand the big hits like Blue Monday etc. They sounded good except when theyspoke!"

Cheers Al, it's definitely not that gig then, as at no time does Barney mention Manchester. He's actually quite apologetic at this show for having a sore throat, and hardly speaks between songs.

isn't this quite a common sort of factual inaccuracy from barney? thinking about digital at finsbree for instance "we've never played this live before"
