Murder

Ok. Just listened to it again whilst on here.

Who knows what its all about?

Should I be goose stepping around the flat or is there something else to it?

What on earth are all the shoutings and "my mind is slipping" all about?

It's a left-over track from the PCL sessions. The samples come from various films, Caligula and 2001 in the main I think.

And the only decent thing about it is the COVER!:D

Defintely a lot of '2001' samples set over some drums that sound like they'd be better on the Cure's "Pornography." Seriously, what were they thinkin' on that one? I can't dance to that Gyorgy Ligeti "music" (the atonal wailing chorus of voices) they sample.

i quite like "murder". let's put it on the "experimental"-shelf. i like it when the order tries something different, just like they did on "Behind Closed Doors". A NewOrder-by-numbers everytime would be boring

I love it! The "shoutings" are sampled from the movie "Caligula" and consist of the leading character saying "Crows! Crows! I hate them!" for some apparent reason. Romans, eh?

I rather liked Murder when it came out - it was so completely different to anything else they had written at that stage, especially when you consider that it had been penned and recorded at the same time as the PCL stuff. True, it didn't fit with any of that stuff in terms of selection for the album, and was probably nearer to Confusion in terms of its use of samples and moving the boundaries of what New Order could do a little further down the road, but it has become a much-maligned track in the minds of many who weren't around when it was. It was quite exciting to hear this completely new and different sounding release so close in time to the more trad. New Order sound of Thieves Like Us.

I've always loved Murder since it was the last NO 12" I had to track down to make my NO collection complete in about 1985. I was amazed it was even a single (of sorts) and on this weird Factory Benelux label like the EGG 12". Part of the appeal of NO for me is the fact that - not so much nowadays - but early on they had a few, mainly instrumental, tracks with unusual rhythms like Elegia, Senses, Chosen Time, Ultraviolence and Ecstasy. Makes a change from the verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus fade. There's been a lot of great electronic/techno artists in the last decade but they haven't varied it like New Order can. Who's behind the experimental ones ? Is it Bernard or Professor S. Morris ?

Years ago I read in an interview that this was Stephens favorite NO track. I like it, especially backed with a great version of Thieves Like Us instrumental (Factory Benelux 12").

Artwork on this single is one of their best I think.

I like Murder and reckon it would have sounded pretty good on PCL. It does make me want to start wars though.

I've always enjoyed murder, I always like when Stephen Morris hits the toms and leaves the traditional high hat, snare, kick drum only sound behind.

i like murder. it reminds me of soilders marching every time i hear it. it has a feeling of war...must be the samples.

Murder is my favourite New Order instrumental - no contest! And whoever mentioned that the drums are reminiscent of "Pornography" (the title track) by the Cure is spot on! Mind you - the latter themselves DID rip the beat off "Atrocity Exhibition" though, didn't they? Yet more proof that Smithy and NO are subconsciously taking it in turns to parody each other! ;)

Agreed. I always thought the drumming on the Pornography album sounded suspiciously like 'Atrocity Exhibition.'

Hey that happened to me the other day...

Bizarrely enough, MURDER was the first ever New Order 12" I bought - in 1984, mainly for the instrumental version of THIEVES LIKE US on the b-side (the local HMV at the time sold out of the original 12", so I picked this one up instead, thinking it was a remix version).

And I think you were right. I'm sure they have done this record (whith same artwork), as a special edition for DJs who were disappointed that they ended their collaboration whith A.Baker. After two dance hits (BM and Confusion), Thieves sounded poor, this remix was really better (love that "come on" at the begining)and it sounds more dance music. According to my taste Murder is a filler. In the 80's it was something current that Bside were better than Aside for the 12" (not only whith NO).

I luv that song.. Especially when I am angry.. Ditto on the Pornography reference. I discover NO in 1984 and bought everything I could. Among that first purchase was Murder.
