He decided to change his boyish visual in the early days of New Order.I think he did it cause he wanted his new band had a different visual of Joy Division.He banned his daily tie and his haircut looks like a porcupine now. Why did he do it in your opinion ? New Order sounds like a new life ?

he should have grown his hair out, dyed it black, and frizzed it out into a spikey bird's nest. then he could wear really baggy dark clothes and huge-tongued tennis shoes and smear lipstick around his mouth and black/purple eyeliner around his eyes. then he could learn how to sing in key for when they perform live.
oh wait....that's all been done before.

A person can change their 'do and clothes when they want. I think he'd look silly if he looked the same over the last 20+ years.

Barney doesn't sound THAT off key live - but I still haven;t watched that Finsbury park dvd yet. Still, Robert Smith does sing fairly in tune live. In fact, with the Cure - from what I've seen and heard live - there's not a huge difference between album and live recordings, with the exception of that saxophone solo in "A night like this" or the amount of guitar solos in "Watching me fall."

I think Barney sounds awesome on the Finsbury Park DVD. Watching it as I type, in fact ('Crystal' - excellent!). The fact that I'm biased and pissed has no bearing on my opinion, honest!!!!! (Just going into 'Transmission' now - again, excellent!) 
Let's be honest -- Barney's singing is mostly terrible at Finsbury Park!
Think of his performance on BLT, for instance.
He doesn't have a real singer's voice to start with, so it comes out to be harder for him when he has two sings several songs in a row live and even play guitar at the same time -- but it makes it all BRUTAL when he starts dancing (jogging) at the same time, because he then becomes out of breath and it shows!
Ah well, I don't like the guy any less! :)
But his performance on Temptation (box set live) almost sounds as if there are three different people taking turns singing. And then there there is the unexpected screaming and shouting for no apparent reason. Atmosphere at Finsbury Park is the best example of the unnecessary and unexpected scream/shout.
Album wise his voice/singing improves with every release. Look at Sting, for example, still sounds like crap after all these years. Robert Smith's singing started sucking after Disintegration--too flat on studio work but much better live (because his emotions improve the song).
i like barneys look as in the get the message video,that kind of manc (manchester) coat with the hood and toggles eveywhere,kind of cool. as for singing live if you think finsbury parks bad you should have heard him at the robbie williams gig in cologne,germany . it was shite....... thats not to mention the dancing........ maybe we should all club together and buy him a shackletons to STOP him from dancing!!!!!!!!!!!!! steve smith,barnsley,uk
