Has anyone heard NO live at Ceasar's Palace, Bradford, England on 19.3.84. Track 9 is an early recording of Face Up and it's absolutely MENTAL!! The words are the funniest I've ever heard by any band, Barney even mentions the Perfect Kiss near the end so it must have been while they were writing Low-Life. Check it out if you can get hold of it.

It's been a while since the last Clayts treat, so here you go pop pickers - Face Up live at Caesar's Palace. Bit of a whopper, this MP3, clocking in at 8.05 MB, encoded at 128kbps - enjoy. Quality - audible, but it ain't super-clean ;)

For a limited period only !

I'll be grabbing that when I get home from the orrifice. Any chance you could share the rest of the gig on one of them there peer-to-peer things. basically this is my fave ever New Order gig, i and my mate bought this 10 times between us and every one was eaten, lost or nicked, now we can't find it anywhere. I'll gladly pay a few quid for a cd if that was easier.

Thank you Clayts for the mp3. I love it and it's a great piece of newOrder history. Cheers. :)

jesus lord god, what a horrible version of that song!

Reminds me of an MP3 of this song from Berlin '84, but much better quality. Thanks again clayts! :thumb: Those lyrics are a blast! I can only imagine seeing Hooky and Stephen glare at Barney during a free form lyric session such as this. Gillian would be glaring only if Barney couldn't see her of course :D

I'd be interested in hearing early versions of This Time of Night too (One of my fave songs of all time).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but TTON was never a 'work in progress' and was set down in the studio before they every got round to playing it live. What you get on Low-Life is how they've always performed it live.

I transcribed the whole lyric several months back, including some corrections on the new-order.net text of the song.

Will these lyrics be similar to the ones on the Hemel Hempsted 85 gig you sent me with references to BBC2 and arse shagging?

Hemel was positively sophisticated in comparison to Bradford ! I hope they didn't learn all this at Salford Grammar !!

Face Up (B. Sumner 19/3/84)

There's no you, me and you, just the two of us

I hope I hope it's always been the same

I've known you since you were sixteen Between your legs I've always been

I prefer fur hats to hairy twats But your hairy twat is like a fur hat

Oh how I cannot bear the thought of you Being like we used to be Alone on our own just the two us

Now you left me all alone Desert my home my very own

Oh how I cannot bear the thought of you Living on my own Just the one I need Just feel me for the rest of my...

We talk of this but you took us down I like shagging you

but I also think you are a fucking fat cow You've got spots

I go to someone else I know Even though I love you I can't leave you alone like I know I should You've got a brain like a piece of wood

And oh how I cannot bear the thought of you Loving you like I used to do We're always meant for each other Brother, someone so like my brother

Oh you're gone such a long time now

It's been such a long time, I know It's been such a long time, I hope

For a long time now I've seen your face It's caused me very much disgrace You look like the Elephant Man That's just talking so I can

Oh how I cannot bear the thought of you Seeing you like I used to do I never knew it would come to this It all started from the perfect kiss! The perfect kiss! The perfect kiss!

Oh how I cannot bear the thought of you Oh how I cannot bear the thought of you, ooh

Oh how I cannot bear the thought of you Seeing you...

Cracking stuff! Must have been some extra curricula activities that Barney attended on the school bus. He must have paid attention then.

Chris, can you enlighten us as to who "Shagger Sheila" was? This almost legendary person was responsible for much of Barney's live impromptu lyrical content, according to the man himself.

I do know a Sheila whom Barney was sniffing around at one time but I doubt he ever got the chance. I will ask the class of 69 for input on this one.

This is certainly true. I remember when the news got round that Barney was the first to lose his virginity I looked at him thinking, the lucky sod, whats he got? In the eyes of 12/13 year olds at an all boys school that sort of achievement rocketed into folklore.

Should have more info in a couple of weeks. There is a class of 69 session at Dukes 92 coming up and rumour has it that Baz (not Bez) will be in attendance. Baz was rather influential in everyones lives at school (see the Middles Book) and Barney was his right hand man when it came to punishment beatings and enforcement!

absolutely brilliant. thats why i love 'em. chances of them doing this version in the next set? cheers for putting it up...

how many other known major alternative lyric versions of tracks are there?

Sunrise had a similarly profane lyric to begin with, I think the Southampton and Gloucester versions showcased this (ahem) "different lyrical perspective". Many other songs have had lyrics changed to suit whichever symptom of Tourette had gripped Barney at the time.
