FORUM OPTIMISATION - WE NEED YOUR INPUT !!!!

As anyone, we'd like to make this forum better.

Not like everyone, we have the ability to modify it easily since it's my own creation, so we'd like your input.

Do you think 30 topics per page is enough?

Do you think 15 posts to have a "hot" topic is enough?

You people post too much, seems all topic gets to 15 easily :D

Actually, I could put the amount of topic per page customisable in the account information, that can be an idea.

If you have any other idea, this is the place to discuss it.

As I said before, I think it would be cool to have, somehow, a list with the most obvious NO topics. Although I can understand it might be difficult to do.

'Best bassline' or 'worst No song' are quite obvious topics. It's quite logical some others think of them, ignoring those threads already existed.

These are also what we might call 'timeless topics' that might pop up anytime in opposition to threads related to specific gigs.

C'est pas un programmeur dont tu aurais besoin pour ça, mais d'un génie sortant d'une bouteille!

Forget it!

But we might have to push people to write: "OT: in their ropics when they are OFF-TOPICS, meaning not about New Order.

Some way to delete 'whiteys'

How about experimenting with a chat room? The current format is fine as most of us I think tend to come and go quite a bit throughout the day, but a chat room might suit at certain times so that the people involved could get a quicker and more real conversation going. I know chatrooms have their drawbacks but an experiment to see how it goes would be a good thing I think. More topics per page is a good idea as often threads you were involved in the day before are gone when you come back and its such a hassle to have to go to page 2. :smoking:

Contrary to Seb`s opinion, I dont think a chat-room would ruin the existing forums.

Well, that would be a hell of a thing to develop, but well... I'll think about it.

You can always use some software that allows you to do that, I think it's "ICQ Webby" that allows you to chat with people on the same website...

At the moment, it's quite easy to lose track of threads unless you flag it up so that you get an e-mail when somebody replies to one of your postings. I've been away on business for a couple of days, and there are hundreds of postings, and I can't even remember where we'd got to on the pros and cons of Madchester Mondays versus Port Vale for example, let alone which thread it was in !

I think it should also be beneficial for threads with no New Order content (and believe it or not a few do sneak in, or at least lose the original plot) to have that fact flagged up.

I agree with the earlier postings that certain favourite topics could be isolated and linked at the top of the board - ie if you want to talk about a particular song, the recent gigs or TV appearances. Categorising the postings would certainly help, though as already posted, a search engine is starting to become a necessity !

I am not against the idea of a chat room anymore -- quite the contrary, as I see a lot of people are using these boards like it was a chat room (many many one-liners). There are certainly a few softwares available out there that we could use for that purpose, and that wouled certainly help in reducing the amount of messages of the board, especially at the dawn of the New Order comeback in the United States, I expect a real explosion of newcomers in the following weeks, which will increase the number of messages accordingly.

It has already started by the way, as we have numerous new registered members each day since a week or two.

As for the WHITEYS, even if I tried I could never do one myself, and eahc time I asked someone how they did it (AND YOU ARE ONE OF THESE PERSONS FACSY !!!), they never replied. So how can we solve a problem without knowing where it comes from?

In any case, I haven't seen a whitey in a week, and it's surely not out of pure coincidence that I haven't neither seen an ERROR 500 (or "Page doesn't exist message") when trying to post a message. SO IT SEEMS WE FINALLY SOLVED THAT HUUUUUUUUGE PROBLEM. I think we solved the two problems altogether, actually.

As for putting certain messages "on top", of course, the only way to do that would be to give the user the power to "flag" their messages: 1) NEWS RELATED; 2) GENERALLY NEW ORDER RELATED; 3) OFF TOPIC. The problem with that would be that some users would flag their messages as "news" when they want them to be on top, and ruin the whole idea. Also, in any message board, the newest messages posted are usually on top, which makes it easier to follow, and I think it's more logical. So I don't know for that...

What *I* would certainly like to be improved is the fact that the new messages are based on a SESSION on the site, and not if it was read or not. So if you go without reading every message and come back 4 hours later, a lot of new messages will be marked as "old" and you might miss a lot of messages like that -- that pissed me off more than once.

I also want the upper design to be enhanced, but that's something else.

And where would you put that exactly?

That was an experiment. I just posted a reply with no text.

I asked Nicolas ages ago to program the message board in a way that it would be impossible to post:

  1. Messages without a topic
  2. Messages with 0 caracters (no content)

Thanks for reminding me!!!!

I try to be a good citizen. I also bought a copy of the US release of GR yesterday, even though I already had bought two advance promo copies plus an import copy of the UK release.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Before I forget, how about an option to set the time to GMT so people in the UK can tell when the last post was made.

Well, time isn't a big thing, in my opinion. You just add the number of hours for your country.

What do I care about GMT ?

What would be more interesting is, as someone else already pointed out, some search engine. Not necessarily need for much. Just a way to find old threads because it's very difficult, when you search for a very precise one, to find it.

Well, that's just a suggestion, anyway, to make this site even better... :)

Instead of setting 15 posts as a hot topic, you should consider the number of users that has posted on that topic. 2 users posting 50 messages on one topic is not a "hot" topic according to me. Maybe if the number of users discussing the subject is somewhere around 5-10, it could be considered as a "hot" topic - ie something that interests a lot of people
