Joy Division back catalogue

I've been compiling a list of all "officially" released Joy Division material that I have, and was wondering if anyone could help me double check it's all there.

There's a few recent mixes and two vinyl tracks I've yet to track down (on Still and the Electric Circus EP on Virgin) mentioned at the bottom, but as far as I'm aware, and according to the 'Heart and Soul' booklet, I think I've pretty much got or listed the lot.

I've not included any bootlegs other than the 'Warsaw' compilation of RCA tracks and the first demo (but that can be bought in stores anyway), and am only really interested in "official" releases.

You can find my list online at http://www.morriso.btinternet.co.uk/JoyDivisionTracks.html and I'd be grateful if anyone here would be able to fill in any "gaps" there may be in my collection. I'm not trying to get every format, just a copy of every track (prefereably on CD).

Cheers, Andy.

Not much to add, except to say that Walked In Line from H&S isn't a demo as you've described it, but the "finished" article. Some time in 81, Hannett and Sumner (and possibly Peter Hook) went back into the studio to add some guitar and do some post-production on The Kill, Walked In Line and The Only Mistake (Something Must Break may also have been included, although this is unconfirmed). So far only Walked In Line has surfaced from that exercise.

Oh, and I can mail you 1,3,4,5 and 6 from your wants list, if you like.

And I can send you the track 2, just let me know.

In the "Unreleased miscellaneous tracks" I noticed that "Exercise One" from the Genetic Demo is missing.

Nice job, Andy. :)

Yes,Ricardo. Exercise One is not listed in Heart and Soul booklet. Very strange really.

A complete Genetic recording of Exercise One doesn't exist though, does it?

you could do worse than check out incubations list on the whats in your new order collection - seems pretty extensive to me!

Yes, it's quite strange. Sounds like a loose Peel session version but for an amazing bit 40 seconds in where Ian screams "Get A Life !!" in that ghastly screech he had. Little Boy Lost should be able to help you with the full version - I've only got the first minute or so.

Sorry, I wasn't being clear. All the versions of it that I have found are incomplete (including Jan's)...only a couple of minutes long and then cut off abruptly. I don't know whether this means they physically never finished working on the song or just that a complete recording isn't available.

One thing I noticed that was strange, is that in the Heart and Soul recording sessions list, they mention Interzone and Shadowplay being recorded in September 1979 for Radio 1's Rock On, yet the "Complete" BBC recordings album has two different tracks from the same month: Transmission and She's Lost Control. Is that a typo in the booklet, or were four songs recorded for that show?

As for mailing those sought tracks, thatnks for the offers guys, but I like the task of tracking the actual items down in record shops. Everyone needs a hobby!

As I understood it (could be wrong, though) the overdubbed versions of those songs are on still, but the first versions mixed before Ian's death are unreleased, except 'Walked in Line' on Heart and Soul. I think that's right?

How easy is it to get hold of the 'Short Circuit' 10" these days? I bet it's an expensive beast?

I've added that 'Excercise One' version to my list, just for completeness, really. Also remembered there's a fade out of 'She's Lost Control' that was on some 12" editions, and is also the version on the "$ Hour Party People soundtrack album.

Aparrently there's a mispressing with longer drums at the beginning... Another one for the "sought" list...!

Having re-read what I wrote, I can confirm that it is utter bollocks. I must have been tired... Yes, what I was struggling to get across is that Walked In Line is the only one of the unfinished songs to have been released so far. Clear? No? Good.

There is still a school of thought that Something Must Break on H&S is different to that on Still, but they sound pretty similar to me.

Yeah, I was just reading that at that Joy Division Central web site. I've just played both 'Something Must Break' versions back to back, and there are subtle differences (a bit like the hard-to-detect differences between the two 12" versions of 'In A Lonely Place'). The 'Still' 'Something must Break' has a bit more reverb on the sounds and some wobbly synths effects every now and again. Probably safe to say they were added by a 'Movement'-era Barney, and that the 'Heart and Soul' version is the 1st mix, I think.

It's a darn sight easier tracking down the Joy Division songs than the New Order ones, I'll give it that!

Yeah, I saw that. I'm looking for the Canadian, five-track CD single to get the additional Arthur Baker remix on CD - any ideas where I could get that? know any good Canadian online record stores anyone?

Indeed, there are two versions of "She's Lost Control" 12" (or at least two different mixes). The full version (4:56, no fade out, ends with a keyboard solo) can be found on "Martin" compilation, "Heart & Soul" boxset and some versions of "Substance" (vinyl only?). The fade out version (4:44, longer keyboard solo) can be found on FACUS2 12", FACUS2UK 12", "And Here Is The Young Man" compilation, some versions of "Substance" and "24 Hour Party People" OST. The latter sounds just a remastered version of the fade out version, with higher volume and clearer sound from the instruments.

Now I will try to be a bit controversial. Some people claim that "You're No Good For Me" is a bogus Warsaw track as it's listed neither in "Touching From A Distance" nor "Heart And Soul". I recall a guy that posted a thread in another forum saying that Peter Hook wasn't able to remember this song when he signed a bootleg.

What do you think? Legit or bogus?

I've often wondered this. I suspect it was done by another Factory/Manchester same era band. Mind you, the playing is bad enough to be early Warsaw stuff, the bass has the same hammered rumble Hooky was displaying back then, and the guitar is pure novice Barney. I dunno.....

Short Circuit was spotted at a Record Fair in Northampton 2 months back for £35, I think it was the Red Vinyl. I'm sure it's also available in Yellow & Blue, but don't quote me on that:lol:

Isn't it in their first demo tape ?

As far as I'm aware it didn't surface till about '87 or '88, i.e. 6 or 7 years after the other 4 tracks that were on the various 'Ideal Beginning' ep's. Tho' I have to say that I can't understand why anyone would want to fake a song that's as bad as 'You're No Good For Me'!

The fact that it wasn't mentioned by anyone in conjunction with the other tracks made me suspicious, but the fact that Hooky doesn't know anything about it rings alarm bells. He, of anyone, is such a historian of the band, so he would know all the details about it if there were any to know.

The version that I've got is only a few seconds short of being complete - it's faded on the guitar outro after the second verse.

Question: is that 'Trouser Enthusiasts' remix of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' commercially available? I've heard it mentioned somewhere before, but it appears to be unreleased. Bit of a scary concept anyway: a Joy Division remix, but I'm not sure if I should be hunting this one down or not?

It's on some obscure promo cd, I recommend covering your ears before playing...

Just happened across this informative site, and have to confess that I've only just begun to get into the music of Joy Division and New Order (I guess it's never too late to start) so as expected I'm now trying to hunt down their records, but of course I need to check which of their official releases would people most recommend I seek out first. I've so far got only a handful of their releases but of course, there must be hundreds of live and session releases that are unofficial issues.

Always suspected YNGFM to be a fake.

Didn't actually know about the existence of a fade-out SLC until I heard the 24HPP soundtrack.

But the real question to be answered here is...

"Is 'Walked in Line' more of a JD or NO track???"

Well, seeing as New Order have played it at least once live (well, in soundchecks anyway).....
