Does anyone have a soundboard quality track of TBTHOG from the april 1987 gig at Brixton Academy?

Can anyone confirm that Brixton academy was the venue for a gig in early 1989 that was televised by (or was exclusivly for?) Big World Cafe on UK's C4? Also does anyone know the setlist? I have Round and Round, Run and Vanishing Point, I also used to have Dream Attack that was shown on a Big World Cafe special later on in the year around NO's Reading gig, unfortunatley I can only find this on cassette now as it was a blinder of a performance :o(

I've also found a video from 83/84 done in a UK TV studio of Age of Consent and Blue Monday, anybody know where it may have come from?

Finally...... does anyone have the theme tune to Americas Most Wanted? (the by The Other Two)

Cheers

  1. Presumably there must be one somewhere cos of course the gig was officially video'ed. However, from memory, Touched came across as a wall of noise and sounded terrible that night - perhaps the reason it never made the vid?

  2. Yep, Brixton. They only played 4 songs. It wasn't a gig, per se, just a venue turned into a TV studio for the night.

  3. Programme was called 'Switch'. Used to go out on C4 on Fridays, if my memory serves me right. 20 years on now so I probably got the channel and day all wrong!

  4. I've never heard this myself so would be fascinated to know what it sounds like.

That Big World Cafe thing was a bit mad wasn't it. Who remembers the other people on the bill? Diamanda Galas & Edward the 2nd and the Red Hot Polkas, anybody? Oh, and not forgetting those godawful jazz-dancers.

Aside from Alex's threesome with Mariella and and the skeleton, the funnier moments weren't screened.

Norder appeared in two goes, to start with (to get us there) and to finish with (to keep us there). At the very end we were kept in while Eagle Eye Cherry re-did his originally fluffed intro. This had to be repeated a number of times whilst he was serenaded with "sign your name across my heart" due to his TTD looks.

Diamanda Galas was greeted with calls for Ceremony, AOC etc. I don't think they were to impressed with us.

Speaking of the '87 gig, did anyone stay for Bronski Beat? I remember a mass exodus taking place.

Cheers guys,

(in response to Al)

1, Tranferred Academy vid onto DVD at weekend, its probably my all time fav gig, spot on perfomance all the way through and I reckon with a bit of deft editing I could create the video track for TBTHOG using footage from the other songs (but Barneys guitar may mysteriously change from Strat to 335 here and there!) Thought as much that TBTHOG had been left off due to "quality" issues as I don't think its ever translated live that well.

2, Ah that explains why its not in the live section here then, would love to get a full version of the set again, I'm pretty sure the broadcast'ed version of Dream Attack came in at the second verse, damn those fools at C4

3, cheers, can't remember it myself, but at least I know what it is now

4, Me too, I kinda like all the instrumental Other Two stuff, on a side note I found and re-recorded Cold Feet, Making Out and Common as Much themes over the weekend, will try and upload them somewhere this week once I've cleaned them up and mp3'd them, couldn't find the Reportage theme tho so you'll have to make do with the slightly muffled version I have.

Not found the Reportage theme yet, but I do have it somewhere...... Not had chance to clean any of these up either so there's a bit of dialog / adverts either side of them. When I get chance I'll rip and UL the rest of the Cold Feet music, apprently there's 10 or mins of it.

I'm no sure what the leech limit is on geocities so it may be an idea for someone else to mirror these somewhere

Oh yeah, they're not really sit files, just rename to .mp3 and enjoy with your favorite player :)

On the Academy video, the performance of DNE is twice intercut with interview footage featuring Steve & Hooky. It isn't very hard to remove those two sections and create a continuous version of DNE (at least audio-wise).

is this the case on both versions of the Academy vhs?

I think I read somewhere at the time that there was some unhappiness with the original release and hence a second version was produced.

or was it just packaging changes made?

Try changing the file extension to .mp3, and Robert is your father's brother ;)

I've been copying my VHS stuff onto DVD as well. By making new chapters and then setting these as hidden, I should in theory get all of DNE in one go. But I haven't tried that yet - stage 1 is just getting all the stuff digitised - stage 2 is tarting it up a bit!

Thanx for the downloads Rob, love 'em. Still waiting for the making out theme, geocities says it will be back on in an hour, will see.

Aye, I've set myself a right little ole project in doing this, I reckon I've got enough stuff for 15 or so DVD's (seriously) I'm also going to do New Order Story and a disc with every video on it (is there a video for 1963?) plus I hope to scan in and have bonus bits of all the cuttings I've collected over the years + all the 12" / Album artwork / Posters to the relevant songs. I'm biting off way more than I can chew here but would also like to use all the rare tracks (tv themes etc etc) as the menu music, its my own little Recycle project if you like (or my Waterloo....) All I need now is a title for it, any suggestions? Re-edit is all I can come up with at the moment.

Is the "making out theme" the same as Vanishing Point? Or is it just inspired bij VP? As there is a Making out mix from Vanishing point, this can't be coincidentally, it seems to me.

The Making Out Theme is a remixed instrumental of VP. There are 2 or 3 mixes available, Rocket Mick and Muffster have them all I think;)

Not strictly true Shug-a-lug. The Making Out Theme bears no direct resemblance to Vanising Point, it's pure electronica, no bass, drum or guitar. To create the VP Making Out Mix, they've taken the main melody from the theme and laid it over the top of VP. I must admit, it's strange to hear the original again after so many years. Thanks again for taking the time, Rob. Definately one for my ever evolving Rarities compilation.

this may be from a "WHISTLE TEST" performance were they also done elegia and perfect kiss. once a year bbc2 would devote 15hours to non stop music and interviews as a responce to the then fledgling mtv

I'm sure that I have some more variations of the Making Out theme on cassette, just have to find the buggers, I know I have a load of the incidental music too, will try and find it all this weekend. I can't remember when the first series of Making Out started, it would be either late 1989 or early 1990, there were two series IIRC, who knows the Making Out Theme could be another Steve and Gillian piece that was hijacked by the band (ie Barney) much like World in Motion was. Does anyone want me to upload audio files of the TV interviews I have? StarTest, Snub TV, a couple of Ozones (bit crap really but you can never have enough stuff) Rapido (revenge) and Whistle Test (Barney, Pat Cash, some tart from Neighbours and Bootsy Collins review singles, hosted by Jools Holland, from late 1990 I think) should be able to do this over the weekend, bird problems permitting but will have to encode at a low rate to keep file sizes reasonable.

Actually thinking about it first series of Making Out aired in spring 1989 (hence it being on R&R), so the idea that it was a Steve and Gillian track does seem more plausable, I also remember them saying in an interview that they did all the music for it outside of New Order but still credited it to the band.

Just going from memory here, but I think the closing credits for the first series said "Music - New Order", and for the second series it had been modified to "Music - Steven And Gillian" or something. Could be wrong, I normally am.

Correct, the music was by Steve & Gillian for the second series. This was quite a good program how about a third series Mr BBC?
