Is that a 'swipe' at New Order or a 'homage'?

Definately a homage Chris IMO
I'm sure Smith was a big JD/NO fan however Hook is definately not a fan of S.Gallup. Accused him of plagarism, called him a c**t. That said, Gallup was up there with the best.

Well, not really the main influence. Both bands were inspired by many of the same people--Bowie, for a major example cited numerous times in relation to both Mr. Curtis and Mr. Smith. JD was certainly an inspiration for the more "goth" direction that The Cure's music would go in 1980. I mean, when JD was opening for The Cure, the latter was still playing stuff off their first album. Mind you, that period of the band's sound changed considerably after the Pornography album in 1982, after which the band gained an influence from the Banshees. The more mature, distinctively 'Cure' sound emerged near the end of the decade, with Disintegration harking back to Pornography.
friday i'm in love was the last straw for me. never bothered with the cure after that.
i hate songs that list the days of the week, grrrr!!!

Plagarizing what? Playing the bass past his knees? that´s one. the other may be buying the same eccleshall bass as hooky. as for the basslines..... there´re a couple ripoffs. even though i think new order did it too (all the way) the cure ripped more to new order than viceversa IMHO.
