We all know what the band think of their old paymaster, but what is this forum's take on Swiss Tony? Personally, I kinda like the guy: sure, he's an Oxbridge nobhead, but I reckon his heart's in the right place, even if his accounts ain't!!

I've never "met" the guy, but at the Xmas '98 Manchester show I remember getting twatted in the concourse bit and in waltzes Mr. Wilson, with shades and long black coat swishing behind him, looking for all the world like a (quasi-)Manc Dracula. Dozens of heads turn as he makes his entrance; I catch one blokes eye and he mouths to me, in no uncertain terms: "Cunt!"

Anyway, prior to the Order's appearance, we were sitting at the back of the arena and Wilson, plus daughter and wife/girlfriend, plonk themselves down in front of us. Vaguely starstruck (hey! I'm from Stoke!), our party listens in to their conversation, which largely involves Wilson explaining to daughter that "non of this music [endless house tunes played by DJ] would be possible without New Order". Not entirely sure if that's true, but Tone's History Today lesson was very amusing, even if it did seem to revolve around the contentious belief that Tone is at the centre of every Yoof Music trend since punk (er, and probably before....).

Although we then buggered off to get sweaty at the front, one of our party stayed behind, later to inform us that Wilson spent most of the gig shaking his head and muttering about how they've always been shit live. Apparently, he left after "Temptation".

So Tony Wilson: God or Git?????

An undoubted GIT, most definitely

Well, I dunno: I doubt New Order (and Joy Division, for that matter) would've been half as interesting and idiosyncratic had it not been for the the likes of Tone and Gretton pushing 'em in certain directions. The perversity and idealism was as much part of the Factory set-up as it was the band's, no??

For unleashing Joy Division and the Durutti Column on the world, I can forgive Anthony H anything - with the possible exception of "Remote Control"

Anthony. H. Wilson. is. a. cock.

All those people who had to endure him on Granada TV in the 80's will surely agree.

Without a doubt, Joy Division minus Gretton and Toner would have been collecting trash, or on top of the pop charts, whichever...

There are just certain people who may not be nice themselves but do a nice thing for others and make themselves better in the process. Tony setting up his own label to record the JD is more than enough to make up for whatever else bullshit he's foisted on the masses.

I wonder how many people posting here have heckled Mr H. Wilson quite as much as I have done in the past: every single IN THE CITY seminar ever held in Manchester (that's twenty-seven separate vocal disaggreements/ sarcastic asides/interruptions!!) . A further FIVE appearances on Granada Upfront. Then three further occasions at free musical events during the Summer months.....Gee...I think I got a bit of a reputation there I believe.......

His consistently awful dress sense is always a good enough reason to make anyone despise him. Bermuda Shorts?? Sandals?? Double-breasted Jackets??? Paisley?? And All at the same time?? I ask you!!

We've all seen it, haven't we? Wilson? In the bath? With Gillian Gilbert? Of New Order Fame? In mid-80s documentary? With HIS reputation??

I should coco.

Still maintain that the guy is OK. Then again, I've got a lot of time for Paul Morley as well, so perhaps I should just give up now.

HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!! SOME ONE ELSE HAS REMEMEBERED THAT PRICELESS SCENE! If you watch carefully, you can see him apparently quickly cup his left hand over his genital area for fear of the camera exposing too much. In reality that was a reflex action to deflect the seismic ripples of a nice 'n'fruity fart he had just unleashed from travelling towards the vicinity of the hapless Gillian. If you're REALLY keen-eared you may just make out a slight "flobba-lobba-lobba" sound as the gas escapes to the surface. And still our Gillian didn't bat an eyelid.

Do you think someone should tell her after all this time??

As he's a Man U fan then obviously he is beneath contempt, however he did earn my grudging admiration when talking about Eric Cantona's kung-fu kick at Selhurst Park. Anyone who describes Crystal Palace supporters as "Croydon wankers" on national TV gets my vote.

He is ACE. He gave you The Other Side of Midnight (The Roses, The Mondays, Warehouse...A Guy Called Gerald/T-Coy, Hooky, he personally funded Unknown Pleasures, he gave you a shitfaced Mr Bill Grundy (10th Summer of Punk G-Mex) he still believes in the almighty A Certain Ratio, he chased the wild dream of FAC51 and got his way as opposed to Hannett's insistence of investing in more lucrative technology for New Order, he told Oasis to F*** off and he even blew out Jarvis (a minor blipp). Yeah he is still ACE.
