I was bored and having a look through my vast collection of CD's and was shocked by how many of them were written by northerners (ie north of Birmingham). I have to admit I do consider myself very much a 'laahhnndaner' and yet seem to have grown a penchant for northern music.
New Order particuarly seem to be touted as being a very northern band. I just don't think us southern jessies are capable of creating decent heartfelt music
Alright Seb? You might as well move oop norf if most of your music collection is from up here.... Our beer and almost everything else is much cheaper too. As well as people being much friendlier (apart from myself of course) up here n all

I went to Manchester to watch the mighty stags (vs Bury I think) and there was a bin on fire. Everyone was just walking past it as though it was an everyday occurence. That sort of turned me off it a bit. If a firework goes off down here the Underground is closed on a 'Security Alert'
I did live up north for a while (hence my Mansfield connection) and have to admit I wasn't that keen. Partly coz Everyone took the piss out of my voice, and partly coz everything eaten up there is covered in gravy/custard
What's wrong with gravy/custard?
It's chuffin marvellous.... Any meal is incomplete without gravy or custard which is so thick you have to cut through it.... I'd much rather have gravy or custard on food than some of that tomato/brown sauce or gayonnaise that you Southern lot seem to delight in smearing all over your consumables
But what do I know....
It rains a lot as well.
P.S. Good to meet you at Brixton Hookster...I managed to get right in front of Barney on the fence at the front. I was absoloutley dripping with sweat by the end of it...Highlight for me was Transmission/Temptation.great show

Likewise Seb; sorry I wasn't more talkative when you came and said hi in the Beehive... I was a bit taken aback when a stranger came up and tapped me on the shoulder and said 'hi, are you hooky monster' or something like that.
I too got down the front against the barrier. I spent most of the gig looking right up Hooky's bass, along with getting squashed and banging the hell out of everyone around me.... But that's what being at the front of a gig is all about really.

Who can forget their timeles paean to the ladyfolk of a small spa town in Derbyshire, "Buxton Scabby Women" (sung, of course, to the tune of "Nutbush City Limits").
On the Norf/Sarf divide, I can't actually think of any really cool band ever to have emerged from London, and if anyone says The Clash they can whistle

On the subject of the North/South divide, lest we forget the bit in the middle known as "Da Midlands". I reckon me, Broughie, Liv and that other bloke on here from Ilkeston, (oh, and Tim Jauncey whever he resides these days) should get together and knock all yer fookin' heads together.

Dudley Wolverhampton Chesterfield Stafford Coventry Leicester Newark Worksop Tamworth Milton Keynes
None of these places are acceptable in any way whatsoever. Drop the bombs on Slough by all means..I had the misfortune to work there for a couple of years...but not until the above have been decimated.
By Northeners I take it you mean as far north as Manchester? Being Scottish it's embarassing that more great bands have come from one city than a whole country. It's grim up North (in Scotland)
I hate to admit it, althought i quite like Derbyshire, im in agreement with Seb....many midlands towns should be sacrificed....
I don't really count in this debate as Im a Welsh -lass....
And if anyone feels like starting on me cause of that, im up for it... c'mon then....

Adding fuel to the fire is OK. so long as said flames are consuming the soulless dump that is M.K.. So we're all in agreement on that one!!
South end of the Midlands?? For me, I guess, no further south than Northampton. And even that's pushing it.
The reasons for my dislike of the SouthEast corner of our septic isle are largely irrational, many fuelled by hopeless footy rivalries, but Seb's right than many towns in the north are dumps. But, of course, they're dumps 'cos they're socio-economically downtrodden, and have been for decades, if not centuries, which makes the affluence of the south east all the uglier, and its elitism all the more abhorrent. The recent(ish) "race riots" had very little to do with "race" per se (though you wouldn't know it by the way the national -ie, London-based - media reported it), but they had everything to do with sections of society pushed to the bottom of the social pile, and then getting understandably pissed off about it. If I lived in Bradford, I'd be out burning cars and chucking bricks at coppers every fucking night!!

OK, without sounding all feeble..fair enough. MK is shite. Thats accepted. I personally feel the 'midlands' covers a much larger region but.....
The fact is 9 million odd people, and virtually all media is based in London...so obviously there is a bias there. What I've generally found is that Londoners in general are far more plaesant friendlier people than the rest of the SOuth East, and i do admit to having a certain pride in saying I'm from London..but each to their own.
I did actually live for a number of years in Warwick so I'm not your archetypal 'No England outside London' type of person.
As regarding race riots nad such like..Brixton wasn't all that long ago, and there was a similar furore kicked up about that at the time. Likewise London's hardly the wealthy, comfortable silver spoon up arse type place that many think it is...take a trip to Elephant and Castle/Peckham/Hounslow etc and there is just as much depravity there as anywhere else in the country
And likewise, I don't think the north is a dump-far from it. Give me Manchester / Yorkshire / Nottinghamshire over fuckin' Surrey or Berkshire any day
No: I didn't have a ticket, and having braved standing/sitting with rabid Burslem folk at the veritable Theatre of Comedy that is Vale Park in the past, I could live without fearing for my life again. I have stared death in the face, and it wears a black and white Vale replica top.

Quite happy to let the whole North/South bit drop: I guess Sebs'll be in agreement with me that the whole thing is far too complex to even scrape the surface on this forum. Anyway, this is no place for needless point-scoring tantrums, fragile egos and pointlessly aggressive arguments.

London's done some great bands for the music scene (The Who, Blur, aforementioned Sex Pistols) but if you want greatness, you gotta go north of the Thames. The Beatles, Echo, and some other great stuff came out of Liverpool, you've got the Jesus and Mary Chain from ole Scotland, and of course, the Manchester sound, as popularized by the Buzzcocks, carried thru by JD/NO and the Smiths, and brought into decline (Think "Caligula" on Ice) with Oasis. Maybe it's something in the water......
PS I'm a Southerner here in the US, the "backwards" tag is labelled on us like it is with Northerners in the UK. Go figure.......
