New Order--film composers?

I was watching "Ravenous" the other day, which has a quality score composed by Michael Nyman and that Damon whats-his-name from Blur. It got me thinking. It's certainly not uncommon for members of rock bands to try their hand at orchestral scoring of movies. Some have succeeded quite well in orchestral film composing (for example, my personal favorite, Danny Elfman, formerly of Oingo Boingo), while it is a one-off affair for others.

So given the use of New Order's songs on soundtracks in the past, and the overall qualities of their music (for example, in their instrumental songs), how well do you think New Order could compose an actual orchestral score (as opposed to individual songs on a soundtrack, as in "Salvation")?

If they could keep their instrumentals up to the level of "Elegia," I'd say they could. But, so far, "Elegia" seems to be their penultimate instrumental.

I remember reading in the Mojo profile back in '01 how Debbie hoped they'd do the score for the adaptation of TFAD. There was no mention of whether they were actually considering it or not, but I think that would be interesting to hear if the whole thing ever came to fruition.

As for possibly scoring other films, I think it would certainly be interesting to hear. I think it could possibly be an outlet for the individual memebers to try their hand at yet another solo thing seperate of the group, or perhaps a New Order effort instead. Either way would be great.

Kind of makes you wonder, which director(s) would possibly want a NO score....

I think he's a bit happy with the composer he has now (Angelo Badalamenti), seeing as they've worked together since 1986.

Minor sidenote: just tonight I watched 'Whale Rider,' a lovely new movie with the newest (and quite good) score by Her Highness, Ms. Lisa Gerrard, formerly of Dead Can Dance. So there's another good score for her track record.

the other two are probably the most likely to have done this with their tv theme work, sure there would be a demand for it from any number of directors where the product is not intended to have compilation cds of the songs on, or inspiring, the film as part of the merchandising bandwagon

i think you are right, but of the four, gillian would be more prone to sitting down and scoring a film.
