there is an 11 minute version of the track in existence, perhaps that's it. does anyone have any info about early recording sessions (times/dates/tracks etc)

That's the Joy Division rehearsal version as featured, though incomplete, on Heart And Soul.

I am looking for this too but I also never heard about this version on this New Jersey tape.

Maxwell's,Hoboken,New Jersey (Saturday,20 Sep 80). On Monday and Tueday,22-23 Sep 80,New order were at Eastern Artists recording Studio (E.A.R.S)in East Orange,New Jersey,where they spent 12 hours the first day and eleven the second recording "Ceremony" and "Little Boy (In a Lonely Place)" on 24-track with Martin hannet producing.The studio's invoices list the band as "New Order a.k.a Joy Division",which points out that the group had planned to record here during the aborted tour earlier that year (We´ve found this dead cheap studio.Fifty-five dollars an hour!" - Martin Hannet).On Tuesday night,while parked outside New Order's Manhattan hotel,the band's rented van containing $30-40,000 worth of uninsured equipment was stolen.Though they spent the next day frantically buying and renting instruments and amplifiers,they were forced to reschuled their Boston date.

Then,beginning Monday,24 Nov,the band spent five days in Cargo Studio,Rochdale,primarily to acquaint Gillian with recording techniques.A week or two after these recording rehearsals the band went into Strawberry for a day or so to re-record "Ceremony".

Aye, that must be the original 7" and 12" versions. The re-recording of Ceremony only came out on 12", and featured a slightly differently mixed version of the In A Lonely Place 12" Mix. Not very different, just the electronic thunderclap sounds appearing in different places, and slightly different EQ.

I'm glad someone mentioned above the time all the equipment got stolen in the van in America, because that's always puzzled me. Did the Joy Division guitars, bass & drums & keyboards all get pinched ? or was it just the 'amp' equipment? I say this because in the following New Order years I'm sure I remember seeing some of their old JD equipment from time to time.

(Apologies here to people who know the names/brands/models of the equipment - I'm no musician and I'm doing this from vague observation and not looking at all the photos/videos again.)

I've seen Barney playing Ian's white guitar for EGG and I'm sure I've seen him play his old JD (brown/wooden looking) guitar. And recently in the interviews they did for Jack magazine they sound like they've still got a lot of JD equipment showing the old white guitar and Hooky's original bass with the letters still on it. I guess they could have replaced everything with exactly the same models again. You'd think that the stolen originals would resurface at auction or ebay with a bit of semi-legendary status attached to them (like every other defunct legendary band's does) unless they all got smashed up and disappeared forever during the Grunge years!

Well these are Joy Division's instruments :

 Stephen Morris had a Black Rodgers concert drum kit with 22-inch bass
 drum, 14-inch Gretsch snare drum, 12-, 13-, 14- and 15-inch hanging
 concert tom-toms, 15-inch Super Zyn hi-hats 20-inch Earth ride and
 crash ride cymbals. 18- and 14-inch Zildjan crash cymbals, a Simmonds
 twin-channel drum synthesiser, a Synare three-drum synthesiser, a
 Musicaid Claptrap and a Boss drum machine

 Peter Hooke played a Yamaha RB1200 bass and a Shergold Marathon
 six-string bass, with a Chorus pedal and either (1) a Hiwatt Custom
 100-watt amp through a Vox Foundation bass cabinet with 2x18-inch
 Goodmans 100-watt speakers or (2) an Alembic pre-amp with a Crown
 Ameron DC300A amp and a Marshall bass cabinet with 4x15-inch
 Gauss 400-watt speakers.

 Bernard Dicken played a Gibson SG Standard and a Shergold Masquerader
 with a Vox UD 30 amp and a Vox Cabinet with 2x12-inch Marshall 
 speakers, and has a Powertran Transcedent 2000 synthesiser and
 an ARP Omni 2 synthesiser. Effects and accessories used are: A Melos
 echo unit, an MXR Graphic, a Chorus Flanger and an Altair PW-5
 Power Attenuator.

 Ian Curtis played Vox Phantom and Vox Teardrop guitars with a Vox
 UD 30 amp and Vox cabinet with 2x12-inch Marshall speakers. 

Was Ian's guitar on Love Will Tear Us Apart (24 HPP) ? Someone said the other instruments belonged to them really,bass and guitar mainly. I think Hooky's 6 string bass is the same he used in Joy Division's days.I am not a specialist,this is for you Tim Bauncey :D

I'd guess that they didn't take Ian's Vox guitar on that American tour as I definitely remember reading that the one seen in 24HPP was the one that belonged to Ian. I also remember reading that a lot of the equipment (including the complete drum kit) was recovered many years later...

I think you are right.No New Order early songs fit with Ian's Vox guitar.Bernard used it only on EGG and it's first appereance live was in May 15th 1981,almost a year later the instruments were stolen...

Ian had two Vox guitars, a Teardrop and a Phantom. Barney is using the Teardrop on Taras, and I can't imagine he'd have bought another of the horrible things, so can only assume that the Phantom was nicked in the States. Great amps, Vox, but shite guitars.
