Now, look at the dodgy individual pics of Hooky, Barney and Steve in the Retro booklet. Same clothes, hairstyles, etc. So presumably there's a photo of that miserable lead singer-type bloke (Ian? 
) with a nice cheesy grin. One for Kevin Cummins' book perhaps? Or too myth-shattering?
They don't call me "The Detective" for nothing... To be truthful, I've never been called "The Detective" in my life.

I must admit it seems over the top to try and restrict photos which have been in the public domain for years.

Yeah, by most accounts Kevin Cummins isn't too pleasant a bloke (he supports City for a start...). He charges £100 per photo (for JD at least - I'm guessing his customers are restricted to certain webmasters :) ), plus I emailed him about 6 months ago to ask how I could go about getting hold of that special edition of the JD book he's due to be releasing, and wasn't even graced with a reply. And I praised him for being the best photographer of JD! Friggin' Mancs...
Mind you, the special editions as published by the original (but now defunct) publishers, Vision On, cost somewhere around £120, so I may just stick to the standard version if it ever sees the light of day.
In my opinion Anton Corbijn took the best photos of Joy Division not Kevin Cummins, he's turned into a real tight-arse because of this book he wants to release. Pennie Smith should release a book of her Joy Division photos, there better than Kevin's.

I agree, perhaps this is why Cummins has the hump, he knows the most iconic picture of the band is Corbijn's shot of them looking down into the 'underworld'. There are two versions of this picture I prefer the one with Ian looking towards us, seeming to invite us to take that journey with them, it's a great photo, really charged with meaning and resonance. Can't find a decent pic right now so apologies for the thumbnail:
I remember reading somewhere Corbijn refuses to say where the photograph was taken in case fans deface the site. I presume someones worked out where it is by now?
Thanks Lucien for the link to Peter Saville's site. I finally got to download the font designed for joy division's substance and atmosphere (been looking for it for ages). I think the reason Corbijn won't tell anyone where the above photo was taken is because manchester city council said he would have to pay for removal of any graffiti found at the location and apparently that costs a small fortune.
It looks like an entry to a subway station. I've always thought it was a subway station. It could have been taken somewhere other than Manchester. Re Cummins, Would a boycott of the book be the proper line of action against someone who is an obvious greedy bastard ?

In England we call it "Tube" :D
I'd always assumed it was taken in a London tube station. If so then I don't think Mr. Corbijn needs to keep it a secret any longer as after about 24 years worth of 'refurbishment' that most stations have undergone it's unlikely to look much like that any more!
