What are some of the songs that Warsaw would probably have played at a concert on June 30, 1977? Since they only recorded Inside the Line, Gutz, The Kill, You're No Good For Me, and At a Later Date at their first recording session on July 18th, would those songs have probably been the only ones being performed at the time? Considering how bad those earliest songs are, I would probably guess that they were the only ones during the middle of 1977. Thoughts?

Can't find that much information on this gig at Rafter's David, except it was Steve Brotherdale's first gig with them. The only other songs they seemed to be doing at that time was a cover of "Louie Louie", "The Kill" and some song called "Tension". Check Joy Division Central for more info. Hope this helps a bit. Cheers mate.

I heard that Novelty is one of their first songs.

Just a false rumour put about for publicity when Transmission was released I believe. Novelty is early enough alright, but not one of the first. 78ish I think but Benny will correct me here.

It is supposed to be written in 1977.

Novelty was played at the last night of the Electric Circus - Jon Savage quoted the lyric in his review.

Novelty is old alright, far more sophisticated than some of the stuff they were doing at the same time, but light years away from what they became so quickly.

Never liked Novelty that muched, but the live version of it on Heart And Soul is excellent, made me respect it more.

Well I have this Warsaw record (semi official release i think) called An Ideal For Killing. It says that Novelty is recorded may 78 at Arrow Studios Manchester.

On those first July "the ideal beginning" sessions they recorded 5 songs: Inside the Line, Gutz, At a Later Date, The Kill and You're no Good For Me. Steve Botherdale was drummer on those songs.'

Quite awful songs ;)

Edit: let's put the name of the album right..

Arrow Studios being where they recorded the RCA tracks, including Novelty.
