Uhm, were New Order always the parallel with The Cure or were The Cure always the most obvious parallel with New Order??? This might be the question. 
I choose the latter version as for Simon Gallop ripping Hookys playing-style off.
Who have started leeching the over first? Not so easy, "Seventeen seconds" and "the top" are really good LP whith their own style, and The Cure are great playing live (see them playing in Orange's Anthic Theater in 85 or 86, 2hours of good music).New Order are really bad playing live (see them in Montpellier in 89, 1 hour of crap), but I love the way they played on Taras Chevchenko. I think R.Smith is right whith the fact Ian's death helps New Order beeing a cult band, but truth is that New order never achived to be a popular band (because of the factory politics?), The Cure where as famous as Eminem in the years 84 to 87 (in France). Now The Cure is an "has been" band, New order/Joy division will forever be a cult band as the Velvet underground or the Stooges even if the only song that will survive them in the history of music is Blue monday. New Order is better because of the mistery, and their music touch the soul as if the songs were written for each one of us personaly. Love will tear us apart - Charlotte sometimes Blue Monday - The walk Sunrise - A forest Dreams never end - In beetween days All the way - Just like heaven Closer stuff (steeve drummings) - Pornography stuff Many other exemples? The worst of this history is the Cure achieving a great hit (in between days) playing a la New Order. The funniest is New Order whith "all the way" copying The Cure copying NO.

If fat Bob hangs himself, that would perhaps give the Cure semi legendary status but I don't think the rest of that bunch would be capable of carrying on without him. If after Ian's death the quality had diminished then NO would have lasted a few years at the most. Nobody can carry off what they did and achieve such heights based only on a legend.

just get him some of that cable that they use on suspension bridges...surely if it can keep the Golden Gate Bridge up, it could help Bobby...of course the next question would be if he could find a structure that was sound enough to suppor the cable and his weight! :D

Actually, I quite like alot of the Cure stuff, and Barney & Hooky aren't exactly 'slim' are they? Gillian can be forgiven - she's popped 2 sprogs. As for Steve - a great advertisemnet for the dietary benefits of being a chain-smoker...

Bizarre; what are you saying that Camus's 'L'etranger' was racist? Grow up.
The first Cure album was sublime. I interviewed Smith over the phone during this period (when I was doing a 'what's on' magazine in Brighton) and he seemed like a really nice geezer. The Forest (the 2nd album?) was equally sublime; but only the title track; which if I remember went on for the whole side of the record (vinyl, man), or maybe I had a 12" version. Whatever, it was fucking cool; and I also saw them live a few times around this period.
Nobody's mentioned he also started playing with Siouxie and the Banshees as well, after she inexplicably fired the guitarist and drummer off their first album. Clearly this affected him, as he then started sacking members of The Cure, and basically turning into a full time lush; at which point I lost interest in him. Although I did have a Cure album, which had 'Hanging Garden' on it which was so self flaggelating (?) that it was brilliant ("I'm always 'wrong'). A great talent gone to s(p)eed.
I don't think you can take anything he said during this period (most of his adult life) very seriously; but having lived through this period I can assure you that a) The Cure were a force to be reckoned with b) nobody ever got them mixed up with New Order - or vice Versa. Probably worth remembering that people like Public Image, U2, and Simple Minds were also there or thereabouts (and playing equally smallscale gigs) at this point. To me New Order are the only ones to have come through with any musical or ideological integrity (as much as I love John Lydon) - I can't listen to any of the others any more.
