decades on 'still'

What's the deal with Decades on 'Still'? I've always wondered what the problem was with Barney's atrocious keyboard skills. Do you think it was because (I may be wrong) they hadn't played the song before live, or because Barney was too busy checking out that Ian didn't collapse (at least until the vocals were over), or was it a combination of such things? Speculate, people.

Also, if Ian played guitar on Decades, did he just not play after the vocals were over--after which, according to the story, he had to be helped off the stage?

Ian stumbled off stage with assistance before the song was finished.He probably didn't play guitar on that one.

The keyboard sounds like it had too much chorus on it, and the pitch bend modulation was also up quite a bit.

De-tuned keyboards wasn't uncommon. It was all part of the "trance-inducing" thing. Curtis had read some gubbins about these Japanese mediums who hypnotised their victims by dance, and at least part of his stage persona was an attempt to create a trance-like state amongst the viewers. The effect was magnified by deliberately de-tuning the pure-set on the keyboard. Unfortunately at Birmingham they overdid it a bit and made it sound appalling !

He seemed to have gotten control over it (a bit!) near the end didn't he?; the chorus was still there, but at least he finally got it back in tune for the last "where have they been" bit.

At least it wasn't as bad as forgetting to put release on the keyboard for that Love will tear us apart at Les Baine Douche!

I heard somewhere that it was deliberate, with the primary intention of making their sound even more unsettling. Nice people :)

yeah, me too. I actually like the Decades keyboards being like that too. And when i listen to a live bootleg over and over i get to like the mistakes. Yeah, I enjoy listening to the live version of Decades off "Still," if only for the macabre factor. Kinda like looking at a car crash; you know you shouldn't, but something compels you. I like to imagine things falling apart and things becoming absolutely tragic as Ian tries to remain onstage as long as possible and Barney starts missing notes. At least that's what I see, regardless if it is true or not--but then again, I love melodrama.

Decades is great. that's all i have to say.
