you all forgot about rudolf hess

Ok, I've read contradictory stories on this, so for the record: Who made the Rudolf Hess comment live at the Electric Circus prior to "At a Later Date" on October the 3rd in the Year of Our Lord Nineteen Hundred and Seventy-Seven? Ian or Barney?

I think it's been established that Barney made the remark and that it was erroneously attributed to Ian (cos he's a Nazi, right...). I think Ideal states it as Barney, or maybe From JD to NO

Um...yes.

Rudolph Hess, btw, was a 27-yr.old lorry driver from York who used to sit in with the band in the early days, and the guys would let him play maracas. Unfortunately, Rudy wasn't able to make it to the Electric Circus gig, which is why Barney mentions him :D

Could Barney even remember what happened half a lifetime ago?

hi there, maybe barney was implying that tha authorities had "forgotten" about the incarceration of rudolph hess due to being jailed for war crimes /crimes against humanity. and incidently my families only claim to fame was that my father was one on rudolph hess"s cell guards in the notorious spandau prison in the 60"s. strange but true! steve smith

maybe my dad murdered him! i couldnt say,i spoke to my dad earlier(after my post)he wasnt actually out side senor hess"s cell but more in charge of the block of cells that he occupied! my dad was only there for a few months and hess died shortly after my dad left. strange but again true. steve smith ,www.barnsley.fc.co.uk

One of my all-time fav episodes of Unsolved Mysteries had to do with the death of "Rudolph Hess" in Spandau. My one gripe: Hess flew to England in a Messerschmitt ME-110 (a twin-engined fighter, like the American one from WWII whose name escapes me at this point. Mike McD will know what I'm talking about), but the UM recreation had him in a single-engined plane!

Oh well, I suppose they couldn't take care of everything...(ever notice how the "actors playing real people" almost never looked like the actual person involved? )

I doubt there are any airworthy Bf 110's today. :( Shame, kinda a kewl plane. The regular Schmitt, the Bf 109, although a few still fly and of those most with a Merlin (UK) engine making them look less authenic, probably was not used either. The US plane you are thinking about is the P-38 which has a twin fuselage and thus looks totally different.

Gotta few million to waste on film footage?? I doubt UM does.

If they can make CGI dinosaurs, why not the proper a/c for historical reenactments? They used CG 109s during Pearl Harbor but used the wrong Spitfire. probably the best scenes of the movie although not relavent to PH.

I went through my "WWII phase" back in middle school, I had all the different fighter planes memorized, but a lot of it's gone now or hard to reach in the back of my brain (I still remember the ace with the most kills in each war - Freddy Richtofen in WWI with 80 or 81, Eric Hartman in WWII with 352)

Yeah, I suppose the 110 hasn't been in demand since 1945, so what few airworthy planes left are pretty expensive. At any rate, the plane they DID use was not a ME 109 (I've always seen them referred to as ME instead of Bf) but most likely a German plane nontheless. I hate to be picky, but...:D

The P-38 was, if memory serves me correctly, eminently preferable to the ME 110 in terms of manuverability, etc. Maybe it's just me, but the pre-jet age airplanes seem more aesthically pleasing to the eye. Obviously jets have to be streamlined to handle the flight, but they just ain't purdy to me. Oh well, enough of this plane-talk....

All early to mid war Messerschmitts were known in Germany as BF not ME. But as Duetsche is such a messed up language the Allies refered to the Bf 110 and 109 as ME for Messerschmitt. Later in the war the Germans re-prefixed Messerschmitts as ME--ME 410, ME 262 and ME 163 are the most famous.

Further off topic, my m8 is in Amsterdam looking for the airport but cannot find a sign or marking on the map that says Luftxxxx. The word he was looking for was Flugxxxx.

Just about every book I ever read about WWII in the air always had the prefex ME for the Messerschmitts, but it's possible I ran across that information somewhere and didn't process it (like much of my high school Chemistry and Math class info, which is lost to time).

In yet another attempt to divert from the original topic, you ever see "Easy Money"? It's probably the one really decent Rodney Dangerfield flick after "Caddyshack", and it even features Joe Pesci and a writing credit from P.J. O'Rourke. In one scene, ole Rodney's trying to build a model airplane (a ME-109), but is going through nicotine/alcohol/drug withdrawel, and finally gives up. Pesci shows up at this point, and as the two are leaving Rod turns to his wife and asks her to clean up the kitchen, "there's a Messerschmitt on the table." (okay, I thought it was funny....)

Better still, I think all the old Nazis moved to Iowa after the war. For example, the ice manufacturers for the State, are obvisously Krauts. One company is Messerschmitt Ice another is Krieg Boys.
