Here's my list of my favourite Slavic writers, artists, actors etc. Sorry for English (I'll dub it in Russian :)).

On natočil Modrý, Bělý a Červený s herečkou Juliette Binoche...

I've read a few of the standard classics. Some are a real pain to go through, but worth it. My copy (in 2 volumes) of War an Peace seems to be 25% written in French, even in translation.

well the russian nobility (well the nobility in most european countries) prefered french to their native toungues in those days. don't know why that persisted for so long as they were fighting the french for much of the 18th centuary.

does Kafka count as a Slavic writer, as he mainly did his writing in German.

Hm... I never heard of him counted as a Slavic writer. He belongs to the German culture (or some even can add, Austrian), since he originated from the Jewish German community in Prague. :)

The same awkward situation is with Leopold von Zacher-Masoch. He also wrote in German and was an Austrian subject, yet he belonged to Galician culture and therefore it's not easy to distinguish which modern culture he should be associated with: German, Austrian, Ukranian or "Galician".

Or Rilke as a Czech artist of Prague ? Well he has a German name... On the other hand, I had students called Kafka from the both sides of Czecho-Slovakia and who could not utter a single word of German...

I'd like to add to the list of great Slavic writers:

  • Vladimir Nabokov - my main man, especially The Luzhin Defence and the stuff he wrote in Russian
  • Joseph Conrad (the case is similar to Kafka's - did not write in his mother tongue)
  • Iordan Radichkov (a Bulgarian writer who died recently)
  • Tsvetan Todorov (does not write fiction, and again, just like Kafka and Joseph Conrad, does not write in his native language, but a great writer anyway - probably the only fellow Bulgarian who makes me real proud to be Bulgarian)
