Monaco's bsides have always been very good in my opinion (No surprise there :D). Particularly from the Music for pleasure era. They showed a more experimental side to the band with "Ultra" and "Shattered" being amazing pieces of electronica. I personally voted for "Ultra" because it simply sounds like a great dance tune that hasn't aged badly at all.
I don't think Hooky had much input on Shattered beyond the famous sampled bassline from Everything's Gone Green. Pottsy once said it was very much his own effort and when he needed a bit of Hooky to complete it as a Monaco composition, he simply sampled the 1982 New Order song. Genius! :D Great track, really pushed the boundaries and came up with something fresh sounding. I still need to get my hands on the limited 10" promo that was given away at a 97 or 98 gig.

Ultra is fabulous, the only Monaco track I can listen to on a regular basis besides WDYWFM. Are there any mixes of it available anywhere?

Nah, no Ultra mixes unfortunately. The only Monaco tracks that got remixed were Shine, Sweet lips, Buzz Gum and See-saw. I remember being surprised Wdywfm? never got the dancefloor treatment at the time as it certainly had potential.

This was a tough poll! At first I was leaning towards Comin' Around Again. Then it was Bicycle Thief. Then Heaven 7. But now I've gone back to Bicycle Thief, by the smallest margin. I really love Hooky's vocals on Heaven 7 and it was my fave b-side of their's for awhile. By the way, I like that Pulp Fiction type soundbit after the halfway mark.
Cool song, but I think Monaco did a lot of good stuff.
Too bad Glassbox wasn't listed. I really liked that one, too. The instrumentals didn't rate as high with me as their vox-counterparts. Perhaps I should give them more listens to be fair.
Wasn't "Under the stars", aka "Weirdo ripoff" a b-side as well? ![]()
Oh wait, that's a US bonus track...
Got both albums, but only single I have is Sweet Lips, would love to hear these BSides though...

It's between 3:50 and 4:01 in Shattered.
You can clearly hear EGG's synth and Hooky's bass warbling behind the drum riff :)
