I'd say it's a tie... both have highs and lows..
Let's face it, it's not something you listen very often, is it? I think I have a few on my playlist, but I just can't listen to YOU CAN FLY anymore... and must not listen to Tasty Fish too often.
However, Selfish will always remain my favorite tune from that side project.
Super Highhways was a big disapointment for me the first time i listened to it. I was hoping for some more tunes sounding like the Ninth Configuration & Loved It (The Other Track) but got something completely different. I really wanted to like it but to no avail. My ears find The Other Two & You to be vastly superior.![]()
Other Two & You was the better album, IMO. I didn't like what's her name singing on some songs from Superhighways.
Should've let Gillian handled ALL the vocals! She is quite capable and much better! Superhighways contained some gems though, just not enough to beat OT&Y.
I would have said that The Other Two & You was my fave, until recently when I've been listening to both a lot more(unlike Spotnik
) - I like both albums. But I tried to burn a disc from the two of them last week & found that I discarded more of TOT&U than Superhighways.
Having said that, the first song I discarded was 'you can fly' - that girl's voice gets on my nerves![]()
It's Superhighways for me - it's been rotated far more in my CD player without a doubt.
Seems that The Other Two encountered some of the traditions of 'difficult third album' syndrome :)
Well, SuperHighways had a few good songs, Ripple, The River and Weird Woman comes to my head... and the title track...
It's not bad, but I wouldn't have it if it wasn't New Order related...
I unfortunately haven't had the opportunity to hear SUPERHIGHWAYS yet, but I love THE OTHER TWO & YOU. It's a great pop album. Tasty Fish is superb. ![]()
Cannot get hold of either album over here in Australia. I dearly chesrish my download of the selfish video - I ADORE this song but have to listen to it on my computer and it ain't all that clear. I can't find the Other Two and You anywhere. Can someone tell me if it was a limited release and my chances of ever seeing a copy or getting a good version of selfish? Has anyone got a better version?
In many ways The Other Two is the best NO spin-off. The first Electronic recd is probably the the best *record* by a NO side project, but after that Barney and JM seemed to run out of ideas and simply become New Order with something missing.
Gill and Steve really step out and make their own sound, distinct and separate from New Order. I'd say that TOTAY is my favourite of the two albums, some great songs and lovely hooks throughout. For example, the way that The Greatest Thing gently builds tension up to the first chorus, just up to the point where it feels a bit *too* linear, then releases it (around 1.45) with 'The says the strangest things'. That little melody under the vocals in the chorus is superb too. Selfish - oh my!! How I flipping love this song. The plain lyrical style (Someone I hate/she thinks she's great/and loves to state/the obvious)has the feel of an overheard pub conversation - that it is exactly what someone might *say* makes for a refreshing change from Barney's clunkiness. Little details, like the way the 'No sense of reason' hook is played instrumentally the first time around (on 1 minute) just make this track so magnificent.
Ninth Configuration - the sound of a thousand Saturday nights. They're all good : Spirit Level. Tasty Fish. Innocence - more Northern verite (Don't come here to clean up your conscience) and *that* ringing synth line at the end of the chorus.
Actually I love this album.
I dont have a hope of getting this album in Brisbane, do I? I just love selfish. Anyone know a place where I can download a better quality version - sort of clearer?

There are copies here : http://www.netsoundsmusic.com/nsds.html
I really love the Other Two albums - both have been getting heavy rotation in my car lately. I particularly like the track "Cold Feet" on Super Highways - just a great pop melody.
Difficult choice here. I'd go for The Other Two & You.
I remember hearing Tasty Fish on the radio around 1990 and thinking this sounds just like New Order, but who is that woman singing?
Similarly, when watching the pilot episode of Cold Feet, I thought the theme music sounded just like New Order or The Other Two, with drum beats similar to Blue Monday. In the end I read the credits and Steve and Gillian it was.
That's how distinctive their sound is. I am one of those who do miss Gillian's simple but beautiful and catchy keyboard lines.
Thanks for the link DC. I don't have a credit card (only 16) but I will badger my brother to borrow his when he hets back from NY. I asked him to look in the stores there but he said he wouldn't. Mean boy.
Cheers for your insights fellas (just realised I hadn't added anything to my original post!)
I have to to say that overall I prefer TOTAY for they are all solid, particularly tracks 1, 3, 5 & 7.
However..... tracks 5, 9, 10 & 12 on Super Highways are very good. Track 12 is my favourite side project track of all time. The synth in the final minute is good enough to make me say "shhussh" to the misses when she's rabbiting on in the car and it comes on! ![]()

Ya thats true but overall i think youll listen more to other two and you above the other albums they came out with.

What did she do before this CD, sing Andrew Lloyd Webber show tunes?! Other than that, it's a great album, best of the two....
